Hey UUers! This week's episode of Uke Minutes is up! Uke Minutes 89 - One String, Two String Technically, the way Aldrine uses it when playing, it should be "Two String, One String," because he starts off with the middle two stings (instead of starting off with the G) :p. Other than that, pretty simple technique for you to mess around with! Questions, comments, suggestions, tips on how to play two strings using your index finger without playing any other string?? Post them all below!
Hey people! The new Uke Minutes (Strum Picking) is now live! Check it out and let us know if you're having any problems, or if you have any questions about the technique, or if you'd like to add anything that might help others, or if you think the editing was absolutely terrible, or ... well, basically anything you'd like to say! Post below and start the discussion!
Hello everybody! March's episode of Uke Lessons is up (and it's not even March yet!). Check it out: Uke Lesson 15 - Island In The Sun This song was discussed a few weeks back in this thread, which lists several takes on chords, tabs, and lyrics for this song. So hopefully we covered pretty much everything that needs to be said about this song (except for pinky mutes, which Aldrine will punch me for mentioning :D). Questions, comments, thoughts, ideas for interpretive dances to this song? Post them below!
Hi guys!I have a little problem with this song...I could learn all the picking part...there's only a problem in the ending part...I make the D chord, than instead of sliding a make a hammer on (because I use only the index finger to make the D with an half barrè),than i pluck the E string,I make the chuck and than I play the G chord...well now I have to restart the picking part (because there's a repetition in the intro) plucking the C string but when I try I'm always out of time  ...could someone explain me exactly the transition between the two picking parts???Thanks a lot, guys!!!Greets from Italy :D Ciao Daniele
Hey, I absolutely love the video lessons for songs: they are comprehensive, a wide selection, and very easy to follow. However, I just recently found this site and have been learning songs off of tabs, so that's what I'm used to. Is there any place where there are tabs for all the videos are written down so I can practice them without having to watch the playalongs to get the chords? If I must, I'll tab them myself. Thanks, Josh
I seem to be able to find most of the other IamHawaii videos except for this one. The sticky with the link to the uploaded videos is missing this one even though the post says it's there. If anyone has this video I'd love to get it from you. Thanks :)
Link: Uke minutes 117 - Mastering Difficult Chords Difficult chords hold me back the most on my path to ukulele one-ness. My uke is a soprano and my hands are XL, so getting my fingers in the right place for some chords sometimes seems impossible. Fingers touching adjacent strings, frets not pressed firmly. It seems to get easier with practice. Even the "impossible" chords. It's nice to have Aldrine confirm that technique of hard-easy-hard-easy (eg. Bb > C) It’s something I’ve been doing occasionally, but now I’ll make it a regular part of my practice routine. I'm still a beginner (6 months) with just one uke, an Ohana Soprano (SK50WG). I hope to get a tenor this year, so I hope my chords will be easier :) Looking round for a...
Hi folks, There seems to be a bit of a double up with both "Videos and Links" & "UU Video Discussion." Should we be posting our videos here or at "Videos and Links?" -Laef
Hey UUers! This month's episode of Uke Lessons is now online! Uke Lesson 30 - Perfect Sometimes Haha, not gonna lie, the picking for this one is a little lengthy and might take you a little while to master (but you can totally do it - we belive in you!). The solo was created by Jake Shimabukuro, who is featured on Justin James' new album, Perfect Sometimes. Just for reference, here are a few Uke Minutes that might help with this picking: 19 - Pull-offs & Hammer-Pull Combos 41 - Muted Octave Strum 47 - How to Bend a Note 88 - Hammer-Pull Exercise Also, if anyone would like to tab out the picking & post it in the Tabs section, that would be awesome! Questions, comments, constructive criticism, favorite moments, rants about picking...
Hey UUers! Uke Minutes 90 is a-rollin': Uke Minutes 90 - 10 Finger Roll This technique is like a fuller, punchier 8 Finger Roll (which, in turn, is an extended 4 Finger Roll). Now that you've got all these rolls down, it's time to rock. Questions, comments, tips, thoughts on rolls & what they're good for, suggestions on how to grow 5 extra fingers on your hand so your can do the 10 finger roll all in one down stroke? Post them below!!
Thank you thank you! Already did my first song using this method Aldrine (the retro soul of Plan B singing "Writings on the Wall"...its got a great rhythm guitar that the uke can easily match I reckon. Check it out at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r7s6M_X9T9I )...I feel do damn clever now!! Got a question though....does the formula change if the song is in a minor key? Apologies in advance if this is a stooopid question.
Hey UUers! Episode 24 of Uke Lessons is up and runnin'! Uke Lesson 24 - Ehu Girl This song has been ALL OVER the airwaves in Hawaii and is pretty sweet, especially because the uke player for this band is one of our very own. Be sure to support them and pick up a copy of Kolohe Kai's album on iTunes! The Play-Along was recorded live this time, so what you hear is exactly what they sound like acoustically. A couple things to note: - In the Play-Along most of the time when Noah (ukulele) is playing G7, it looked & sounded like Roman (guitar) was playing G. In the chord diagrams I stuck to what the ukulele was playing. - The Dm before the pre-chorus (..."it was just like heaven & a dream come true...") is a down strum on Am7 (0000)...
Hey UUers! This months episode of UKE LESSONS goes a little something like this ... "BREAKDOWN"! (by Jack Johnson) Take a look, try it out, and tell us what you think!! If you have any questions, ideas, alternatives, new techniques, etc. - Post them here!
Info links for Live Lesson Wed 08/11/2010 Hi folks. I'm in Europe, watching the replay of Aldrine's 08/11/2010 UUU lesson and would love to be able to access the same web site that was used for the song, Hi' ilawe. Aldrine posted the URL to the chat stream during the lesson, but of course that is not available after the event. Could this information be made available somewhere for replay viewings? Thanks. :)
The new Uke Minutes is up on the front page. http://ukuleleunderground.com/2008/02/18/uke-minutes-5-how-to-re-string-your-ukulele/ If you have more questions about restringing your uke, you can post them here.
Hey UUers! This month's episode of Uke Lessons is here: Uke Lesson 32 - The Man Who Can't Be Moved This song was written and recorded by the Irish band, The Script. Aldrine's version features an ukulele take on the signature guitar picking pattern that carries throughout the song - try it out and play along! A few quick notes for UL 32: The strumming pattern in the lesson doesn't quite fit the Play-Along exactly, but you can definitely use it to play your own version of the song or modify it a bit to fit what feels right for you. During the bridge of the song, the picking pattern stays the same (C,E,A,C,E,A,C,E) you just need to hold the chords for the bridge instead of the fingering for the picking. Questions, suggestions...
Hey UUers! It's a new month and a new episode of Uke Lessons for you to devour and digest: Uke Lesson 31 - Rodeo Clowns Written by Jack Johnson and recorded by both Johnson and G. Love & Special Sauce, this song is a pretty interesting one. The intro is based on a lot of alternate chord positions, so take it slow, practice, and once you've got the chord shapes down it should be cake. Questions, comments, thoughts, suggestions, compliments on Russ' smooth 'n' sexy guitar playing, praise/reproval of our choice to teach yet another Jack Johnson song?? Post them all below!
Hey UUers! This week's episode of Uke Minutes is here: Uke Minutes 92 - Diminished Run Exercise It's a nifty little run you can use to practice your picking or something you can use in solos over diminished chords. Go wild! Questions, comments, ideas, helpful hints, examples of songs that display excellent use of diminished chords? Post them all below!
Hey UUers! This week's episode of Uke Minutes is online: Uke Minutes 91 - Added Octave Chord Inversions This one helps out a lot when you need to stay on a single chord, but you don't want it to get too monotonous - putting in these pinky-additions adds a little color and movement to your chords. You can figure out the added octaves for other chord shapes as well: If you know the notes that make up your chord, just find the closest note up on the A string and put your pinky there. For example - Your D chord is made up of the notes: D, F#, and A For the regular D chord, G string 2nd fret = A note C string 2nd fret = D note E string 2nd fret = F# note A string 0 fret = A note The next closest note on the A string that falls...
