I'm going to attempt to replace the cruddy original strings on my Yamaha Guitalele with the hopes that it might improve something, anything. The instrument is invaluably practical and convenient to carry along with my soprano because it allows me to play guitar songs on it. But, man, my guitalele sounds . . . well, less than pleasing.

Anyway, are there any recommendations? I've not had a bad experience with Aquila's nylgut stuff for my sopranos. Does Aquila have a six-string guitalele pack?

Thanks

There's a e tuning set too, but... it doesn't sound right on my mini, while the a set does sound fine.

I have used the Thomastik-Infeld CF128 Chrome Flatwound set tuned up to ADGCEA and it works fine, intonates well and sounds good to me.

see:

You can also get the CF-127 set which does NOT have a wound 3rd string, but for me the 0.039" nylon seems kinda dead on such a short scale length of 17" on the Yamaha GL-1, and the 0.027" wound 3rd from the CF-128 set actually makes it sound more guitar-like to my ear.

The T-I strings also last a LONG time before getting impressions from the frets, while also being flatwound have much less finger noise than the 5 other sets of flat/smooth-wound strings I've tried.

They are also sold as single strings too, as you can see from here:

https://www.stringsbymail.com/class...feld-63/classic-n-series-88/cf127-chrome-165/

I also am using these on my Cordoba Mini SM-CE, but in Terz tuning GCFBbDG, and they work very well there too.

I hate string squeak/finger noise in my playing and it is much reduced with these strings.

Hope this helps! :)

We have the Cordoba with the Aquila strings. Three of the six are wound, fyi.

90% of the classical guitar, guitalele, guilele, and 'kiku' strings sets I've seen are exactly 3 wound and 3 unwound, which has been the standard for nearly 100 yrs for strings on instruments like these. :)

the cruddy original strings on my Yamaha Guitalele

Agree!

After finding a thread on UU, I went with D'Addario EJ16. They were a huge improvement over the originals!!

Well, I think I'm going to go with these. Thanks.

When the strings cost 20% of the instrument itself when buying it brand new . . . Maybe if I had an ukulele worthy of these Thomastiks. I don't doubt their quality, and am grateful for your input, but it's like putting Pirellis on a Yugo, or me wearing a Rolex.

In that case, you can also go with the D'Addario EJ27N, which are only $4.49 per set and are in fact quite decent strings with great longevity.

I've used them in the past too with no issues on the Yamaha GL-1.
