Occasionally somewhat asks when buying an instrument for another country what duty and tax they may have to pay when the item crosses the border. Here's a graphic from an article just published in CBC that shows the threshold below which duty/tax is not collected for goods entering Canada, Mexico, NZ, OZ and US. (click on thumbnail)

The NZ one is not quite correct. $400.00 is the threshold for 15% GST to be added, however many items attract customs duty irrelevant of price. Shoes being an example. Buyers need to check for themselves.
 
Worth pointing out that (at least for Oz anyway) the $1000 applies to the total cost... which means goods + shipping. So, a $900 uke +$80 shipping is all good, but a $900 uke + $120 shipping will cost a whole lot more to bring in!
