Collabs anybody? This looks really cool!

That would be really neat to try. I'm not confident my computer would run smoothly.

You need pretty low latency connections between session participants. I've never tried to use it. I lack a digital PC interface at this point. Looks like they are planning on releasing their own branded hardware interface as well. I hope to give it a try sometime. It could be a great way to do some simple collabs in real time instead of sending vid files back and forth. I think it only records audio too. I can't imagine trying to sync video as well.

It looks very cool and promises low latency with the audio at least but it asks for a 1Mbps UPLOAD speed... I get about .2Mbps on a good day so until fibre optic comes to to town it won't be usable for me.

(see the FAQ)

That's a shame as I'd be up for a bit of live jamming but as is so often the case with these things the technology moves quicker than the connection speed (or indeed battery life) which are always playing catch-up and until these basics are sorted out it's stifles progression IMO.

But to those of you with better connections should go for it as it will be fantastic if those latency figures are as low as they claim :)

Janet bonesigh has just pointed me toward Bandhub. That might be a more practicable alternative. You can find UkeyDave waiting over there too: http://bandhub.us/UkeyDave

I think you mistyped the link, Paul. My computer kept trying to find "andhub.us" and failing. I added the "b" and got there OK but they only support PC & Mac, so no use to me as I use Linux. No tablets either which is surprising as there are increasing numbers of folk using them, especially iPads, for recording.

I might email them about Linux & tablet support.

Thanks! Fixed the link. Mac OS X is based on FreeBSD, another Unix clone (it [OS X] just has a fancy - and proprietary - GUI), so in principle it shouldn't be difficult for Bandhub to port this to Linux.

I have the same concerns about latency. I know when I tried to use Audacity with a USB microphone, there was a delay setting you could try to use to help with the USB latency, but it was still bad enough to drive me to buy a Tascam DP004 (later upgraded to a DP008) to do my multi-track recordings.

I too use a multi track recorder for my recordings rather than the PC. The other factor apart from latency is I can turn the PC off so there is no fan noise. I have a Tascam DP006 and a Boss BR800. I mostly use the Tascam, especially if it's simple acoustic recordings as the built in mics are pretty good so setting up is easy and quickly done. The Boss has more channels and some good built in effects.

However apparently interfaces for recording direct to a computer now come with low latency drivers so latency has become much less of an issue. I still prefer to use an external recorder but I do then export the recording to the computer and use Audacity to finish them off. Mostly a little compression to iron out some of the unevenness of the recording, a little reverb as the room I record in is small and fairly dry so a touch (and I mean a touch unless I'm deliberately using it as an effect) of reverb helps to add a bit of life to the recordings.

Tootler - It sounds like we record a lot alike. I turn off my PC when I record, as well, because I don't like the fan noise.

It's also possible to run Windows software in Linux using Wine but it can be hit or miss. It depends on the specific program. Some run no trouble others with tweaking and yet others not at all. Nevertheless Wine is useful, as it gives access to software that may not be available on Linux or, if like me you came from Windows you can continue to use existing software that you find useful.

It all really depends exactly how bandhub's software operates.

Hey tootler, I'm not very good, but if you ever want to do an audio collab, just let me know. I have dropped the wav files off the DP008 into Dropbox before for collabs with folks that can input them into the Tascam.

If anyone would like to collab on one of my video's be my guest. There are a few up on Bandhub here http://bandhub.us/Bonesigh I had to download Chrome in order to use Bandhub. I had only just found Dave on the hub and then...well ); I don't think you can add music unless the recording that you did is approved by the OP.

So they are apparently releasing a special dual interface designed to work with their service, which will remain free. The jamblaster was designed for ultra low latency as does not require a computer. Only a tablet or other mobile device. Kickstarter campaign beging Feb 9 and it will cost 199

I might give this a try.

Concerning the etiquitte and protocol of knowing the key and chords on a collab, and how to join in, I wrote Pablo at BandHub with my question. Here is his reply:

Hi Larry,

The only way (at least for now) is asking people who are participating. Also, it’s usually a good idea asking people if they’d like you to join. There are 2 reasons for that: avoiding recording on collabs that are not actively maintained by the user who created it, and also some people have certain preferences.

We are working on some tutorials, they are indeed needed.

Thanks!

I got in touch with pablo osinaga of bandhub, and he has sent me the links to all of Dave's collaborations - all unlisted! So there's a few more for the DVD in any case, but if you want to see what the 'finished article' looks like, here they all are:

Hi Paul,

We are so sorry for this loss!!! Dave will be surelly miss in Bandhub.

Here are the links to youtube videos of all the collabs he participated:

There are a lot of other videos he imported from his youtube channel. Please let me know if you need those too.

Please send his family and friends our deepest condolences. He will live forever in our hearts with his music!

Pablo

Thanks for those Redpaul1. I didn't know Dave, but was sorry to hear the news. I'm certainly way behind on the curve on using this collab software
