THEME: The songs of Robert Burns (Season #154)

25th January is the birthday of Scotland’s national bard Robert Burns,
and this season is a celebration of his poems and music. You can choose
to go all romantic and do one of his love songs or if you feel in a
revolutionary mood then go for his Jacobite songs.

Since you might be unfamiliar with his works I have made for your
edification and listening pleasure

Burns Playlist

Pick ONE Burns song for your official entry.

I hear you say that your insatiable appetite for playing the uke cannot be satisfied
by only ONE song, and since centuries old music might not appeal to you, you can
also choose to do a couple of songs by Gogol Bordello the gypsy punk Band from
the Ukraine. Please watch this video to get a feel for these two songs. I think you
will enjoy them especially if you play them standing on a table.

Gogol Bordello: NPR Tiny Desk

The songs are as follows.

Start wearing purple (chords)

Pala Tute (chords)

I would like as many covers of these two songs as possible
so play them from your heart with as much energy as possible…
liberate yourself musically. Find a freedom that you have not known before.

To summarize:
1: Play ONE Burns song for the official season #154 playlist
Include some text about why this particular Burns song appealed to you.

2: Play EITHER or BOTH of the Gogol Bordello songs for the bonus playlist.
Spank that Uke like it has never been spanked before, and enjoy yourself

All types of creativity welcome and Long live the seasons!

You had me at "Robert Burns"

You cemented my intrest at "Gogol Bordello"

Should be a fun challenge Rob:D

Great theme! Remember Burns also wrote some incredible "dirty ditties" too ;)

PS If my name came off the dartboard, let it be the Van Morrison, please! :)

I am sure you could write a tune to them. How about expanding on.

Husband, husband cease your strife
No longer idly rave Sir
although I am your wedded wife
Indeed I'm not your slave Sir

Burns, definitely. I have one or two in mind. I'm not sure about Gogol Bordello, though.

Crank up the Riza to 11, gargle with small stones and razor blades and give Gogol a go. All that gypsy stuff is in Am and it is easy.

After seeing your Toes video. I would say Gogol was made for both you. (Mike and Andrew)

Nice one, Rob!

I have my song. :) Not familiar with Gogol Bordello, so shall have to investigate those tunes. Fell in love with a Burns poem/song long ago, now I bring that to the table.

O My Love Is Like A Red, Red Rose.

The most beautiful love song ever written.

Nice one OGG. :)

Eeyup. I was happy to see "Start Wearing Purple" on the list. Back in high school I knew like, 3 or 4 guys who'd play it with me during band practice. I think we had a guitar, vibraphone, drumset, and at least 2 voices going. I REALLY wish we had filmed it once... but yeah. That kinda cemented my love of Gogol Bordello. :)

The challenge for me is gonna be good old Robbie Burns. I know some of his poetry, but it's gonna be getting them down as songs that'll be the fun part this week.

Burns is reputed to have written some of the verses for the ballad known as both "The Ball At Kerriemuir" and "The Ball at Balliemoor".

It may be better known as "Balls To Your Partner". Jim Croce recorded a version of this before his untimely death. The first known recording of the song was in 1938. I've known it since about 1975.

Does it count? Keeping in mind that the language used it isn't suitable for those under 16, or certain politicians.

Well what a coincidence - I was just saying this very thing to my hubby the other day. How little things have changed over the years.
