The haiku contest
It seems just like yesterday
I came in dead last. :D

One minute per song
Or should I say a songlet
Lets all just have fun

Dark, hot and humid
He lurks deep in the shadows
Entertaining dreams

Who are you, dark night?
The rainclouds start to gather
And shower much drool.

It is interesting how many of you can look at Joo's pictures and your mind is flooded with lyrics. I look at them and nothing. I don't mean that in a bad way Joo, they are very cool but its just like my mind doesn't see them in a way that produces any particular thoughts...weird.

The BDU’s Haiku Songlet
A songlet of nought
Please play it for Miss JooJoo
With Mr. Doug’s UKE.

I am from Texas
I wear brown paper trousers
I am a Rustler

Brown paper trousers
Work well in Texas’s dust storm
But not when it rains.

I'm writing some proper Haiku now...in the 5,7,5 structure...
and also trying to juxtapose 2 unlikely things as would a Haiku...
That's not so easy...
but the hardest part is to put melody over it.

Songs are easier to write!!!

My try :

Haïkulele, Haïkulele,
Four strings are singing !
And the wind is blowing.

That's beautiful!!!
The sopranino sounds so lovely too!

Very fast spider
or an extremely slow song

This Ha'i'ku Is based on a reference to a John Milton poem which coined the phrase "I Tripped the Light Fantastic", (sort of). How does one trip over light? Play a poem? Ears smile? These are not concepts or ideas. Hopefully they will emote feelings.

You will note this is an unconventional English Haiku. It is not 5-7-5, It is 7-5-7. For me the Rhythm or meter is important in poetry, or any spoken art form. The Japanese have more sounds in their syllables anyway; but although much Nipponese poetry has more than three lines it is frequently in line lengths of 5 and 7 sound lines. Greek epic poetry is the same way it has variable foot length.

Indeed! Figuring out how to set these to music is the hardest part by far. It's like trying to display an earring to "tie the room together". It's a tiny little thing to work with!

Karen Lee New(Wo)man And I sing this song for the Kids at Fort Hunter. I remember the day we made it up. The Rockville Bridge is not the longest stone arch bridge any more but it is the Longest Stone Arch Rail Road Bridge.

A portion of a song I wrote...

Crawl, cry. I’ve been disappearing.
Yes, I doubt his misunderstood ways
Unfit shakes my temperance
Somewhat because of He

Vast is his dawn
Those bruises I have had them all
Resentment moves this dying flower
