Below is his descriptive verbiage about his song entry:
------------------------------
Dear Family and Friends,
Please vote for my video at http://www.hawaiianliterature.com/videos-2015
I submitted an entry to the "Hoʻokūkū Mele a Moʻolelo" Hawaiian language poem and story composition contest. This is the first year of the contest. There are two parts to the judging: 1) a panel judges the composition and 2) an optional video contest by popular vote.
I was moved to compose the song in 2010 for Keoki Kahumoku’s Hawaiian Music and Lifestyle Workshop held in Pāhala, Kaʻū, Hawaiʻi after being invited to teach once again for the 5th year anniversary.
I utilize some minors to evoke a feeling of something precious “nearly” lost. Through Keokiʻs vision with his many colleagues and supporters, cultural traditions are shared by instructors with attendees. But most importantly with the young of Pāhala and surrounding communities.
The youth are sponsored through scholarship funds and their participation in helping with workshop duties. The bones of our ancestors shall live through our young perpetuating our cultural traditions.
I composed a chant for Keoki and the workshop in 2005, the inaugural year, teaching it to all who attended. The chant has been taught every year since. The workshop celebrates its 10th year this year!
My video entry is basic with me playing, singing, then chanting. The sound could be better and my singing could use more polish. I have ideas brewing for next year’s competition, especially how to produce a better video with lyrics, images, and improved sound quality.
I would appreciate a vote this year though! The deadline to vote is September 1, but please vote now. Click on my video to place your vote. Check out the other entries too! http://www.hawaiianliterature.com/videos-2015
