Here is another idea I tried based on much Internet research - converting an acoustic guitar to acoustic bass. Thought I would share it here.

Here are the direct links to the posts on the Talkbass forum - bass guitar - luthier's corner

It worked out great and should be doable by anyone with basic skills and tools.

I had my eyes on converting a Yamaha small guitar to a bass, but at the risk of being reprimanded again for hijacking a thread, I ended up converting a Les Paul 22" scale solid body electric instead, which I've posted on the Talk Bass forum.

I did see that one and thought it was an exceptional mod! Did you find the 6 pole pickups a problem with the 4 bass strings or are they close enough to a pole to even it out?

The six string pickups are no problem at all to my ear, I think it sounds really good. I was just at Guitar Center WLA and saw a really nice Martin 3/4 acoustic guitar for $309 that could be made into a bass too, 22.5" scale, 33" long, but since I have two very nice small acoustic basses, I'm not planning on it.

Yes, thunderguts. I did that one more to see if I could, it's rough but works. I did actually play it on a gig for a cocktail jazz set though. The bass sounded good, even if I didn't!
