Looking forward to your NUD, kissing! Here is another great demo video of the new BN-1, this time from Uke Republic:

Thanks Rakelele,
I am quite impressed that his particular satin model was quite more figured than the one shown on the HMS website.
It looks beautiful, and it makes me glad I went with Satin.
Curiously enough, the look of the one at Uke Republic is what I expected Pono Acacia satin to look like

The particular model photographed on the HMS website looks lighter and not as stripey.. almost like it's unstained mahogany.

It has its own appeal though.. Something about it just feels very "Country stage musician" or "New Orleans street musician".. can't quite explain it with logic.
I hope mine looks pretty in person :\
Still no word that it has been shipped... the wait is killing me
The Ukulele Site already have the Pono Nui stock, but it takes a bit of time to install the electric pickup I requested, and setup.
The Pono Nui are tuned DGBE (baritone ukulele). Theyre not designed to be GCEA, and I dont think you can, due to the longer scale length.
Low-D is its normal tuning.
It is classified as a "baritone" ukulele, but is bigger and longer.
Ah talking with my shop about if Pono would be quicker with the pickup install or would the shop in terms of turn around time and cost.
I'm not in a hurry but I'd rather it done right and gives me Time to save. I've waited months for a instrument before.. Almost killed me but hey I'm still alive lol
There is a specific vendor that does make the string GCEA tuning now

I have one I can do that with already..but I still want that hollow body sound in the Pono.Actually, upon reading your opening topic - being after a "rock" sound that is tuned like guitar, but is still an ukulele..
Have you considered a Solid Body Baritone Electric ukulele, such as this Pono?

They are loud enough to be heard acoustically for practicing.
But being a solid body electric allows you to plug it into guitar amplifiers, and make it sound like anything you want
That's Guadalupe's GCEA in an octave LOWER than standard ukulele.
I have plenty of experience with those strings. It makes your ukulele tuned LOWER than baritone. It's an unusual tuning.
I don't think the Guadalupe strings would be long enough to fit a Nui. I have ordered the Guadalupe strings several times and have found they are *just* long enough for normal baritone.
That being said, you don't need to use that brand of strings. If you buy a "low tension" set of Classical Guitar strings (I recommend D'addario Pro Arte, Light Tension), and used the ADGB strings, I'm pretty sure you can tune it to the same tuning as Guadalupe on a Pono Nui. On a regular baritone ukulele, use the EADG strings to tune to octave low GCEA.
Personally speaking, I'm not a huge fan of this tuning. There are limited applications - sounds too muddy to strum.
Nevertheless, here is a recording I did using the GCEA Guadalupe strings a while back:

Personally I think DGBE tuning is better balanced for a baritone and Nui ukulele in terms of tone (not too high, not too low), tension and feel.
If you want a 4-stringed steel string electric guitar perfect to substitute a baritone, here is another beautiful instrument I used to own:

I like a deep, warm sound and recently decided to see how "guitar-like" a uke could sound. I like cedar tops for their sound so I went uke shopping online and bought a Kamoa E5 tenor. Kamoa sets up their ukes with compensated saddles for low G and I strung mine up with Southcoast ML-WB strings. It has a nice rich sound. I don't know if you've tried the Southcoast strings but I highly recommend them. It may save you the expense of buying another uke (although we all need another uke).
