One of my favorite songs is Fishin Blues, recorded by Taj Mahal. I've looked all over the place for the lyrics/chords/tabs, but to no avail.
Can anyone help me with this?

Nice one Campbell, much appreciated, I am putting together a blues set list and this will fit in quite nicely, great suggestion Nickie, thanx for bringing it to my attention, kaizer

Been a while since I played it, but I recall it was a pretty straight forward 12 bar format. I-IV-V with some 7ths thrown in.

It's a 16 bar blues with an extra 2 bars tagged on the end. 18 bars of fun :D

Here's how I play it - key of C:
Fishin’ Blues

<C> I betcha' goin' fishin' all o' the time,
well my baby's goin' <F> fishin' <C> too
Bet your life that your sweet wife's
gonna <D7> catch more fish than <G> you <G7>

<C> Many fish bites if you got <C7> good bait,
<F> Here's a little tip that I would like to <F#dim> relate
<C> With my pole and my line,
I'm a goin' <F> fishin', <C> yes I'm goin' <F> fishin'
And my <C> baby goin' <G7> fishin' too <C>

I went on down my favorite fishin' hole,
got myself a pole an' line
Caught a nine poun' catfish
On the bottom, yes I got him
And I brought him home just about supper time

Many fish bites if you got good bait
Here's a little tip that I would like to relate
Many fish bites if you got good bait
I'm a goin' fishin', yes I'm goin' fishin'
And my baby goin' fishin' too

Baby brother 'bout to run me outta my mind
Sayin', "Can I go fishin' with you?"
So I took him on down to the favorite fishin' hole
Now what do you think that brother of mine did do?
Caught a seven poun' catfish on the bottom yes he got him
Took him home to mama he was real gone
With his pole and his line
He’s a-goin' fishin', yes he goin' fishin'
And my baby goin' fishin' too

Put him in the pot, baby put him in the pan
Mama cook him till he nice an' brown
Get yourself a batch o them hoe cakes mama
An' you put it on the table and eat it on down

Many fish bites if you got good bait
Well here's a little tip that I would like to relate
With my pole and my line
I'm a goin' fishin', yes I'm goin' fishin'
My baby gone fishin' too

I betcha' goin' fishin' all o' the time
Mama goin' fishin' too
Bet you life, your sweet life
I gonna catch more fish than you
Many fish bites if you got good bait
Here's a little tip that I would like to relate
With my pole and my line

I'm a goin' fishin', yes I'm goin' fishin'
And my baby goin' fishin' too
I'm a goin' fishin', yes I'm goin' fishin'
And my baby goin' fishin' too
I'm a goin' fishin', yes I'm goin' fishin'
And my baby goin' fishin' too

Another version

Hi Nickie,

Here's another version for you. Can't have too many options. :)

There is a pull-off of the E string from the D chords in the last line approximately on the word Fishin' listen along and you'll hear it. I think Alan Thornton did another version that same season, and included a little tutorial in the comments as well. I'll see if I can find it.

Code:
  D A D
Mama goin fishin?, all a the time, I?m a-goin fishin? too.

Great song, Nickie! Always fun to play. I do it in G (C rarely works for my low voice), easy peasy.

This song first came to my notice through a supermarket ad on TV. An internet search didn't produce much. There was mention of Henry Smith who was compiling an anthology of American folk music but I could find no mention of the artist at that stage. Then I came across the book "Juke'n The Uke" by Mark Kaimana Nelson. He attributes the recording I heard to Henry "Ragtime Texas" Thomas, recorded in 1927.

The version in the book is for Low G in the key of F.

Hi Nicki, These are Doc Watson's lyrics. The arrangement is mine for the key of C. If I were to do this in the Key of D; which is my natural sing key,; I would replace the D chords and D7 chords with various Dm and D7 combinations for a Bluesier sound. I like Kurt's use of the Cdim, (F#dim), chord too. I will have to try that!

I transcribe a song using the R=I, O = II, Y = III, G = IV, B = V, I = VI, V = VII; method. Among other benefits it shows you those A7,D7.G7 combination that sound so good on ukulele. I thought I invented this transcription method but it turns out that Sir Isaac Newton came up with it first!

[C] I walked down the hill about [C7] twelve o'clock
[F] I sat right down on a [F7] great big rock
[C] I looked down the water and blessed my [Am7] soul
[D7] I seen a great big catfish jumping [G7] out of that hole

Chorus:
[C] I'm a going fishing 'cause everybody's fishing
And I'm a going [G7] fishing [C] too
You bet your life That your lovin' wife
Might [F] catch more fish than [G] you
[C] Any fish will bite if you [C7] got good bate
And [F] here's a little something That I'd [F7] like to relate
[C] And when it's time to bite, Lord, the fish won't [C6] wait
[C] I'm a gonna fishing'cause [F] everybody's fishing
[C] And I'm a going [G7] fishing [C] too

[C]I went to the store and I [C7] took a look
[F]Got a pole, some line and [F7]a triple hook
[C]Then an old man smiled as he said to[Am7] me
[D7]Son, catch a big cat-[G7]fish for me

Chorus

[C] I lean right back against a [C7] big old tree
[F] Then a big old bass took a [F7] look at me
[C] He took my bait when I throwed my [Am7] line
[D7] When I got him to the bank, Lord,[G7] he sure looked fine

Chorus
