The end of the coming week sees the end of daylight saving time here in the UK. This gave me the idea of a theme based on 'Time' and 'Change'.

The challenge is to record a song based on the ideas contained in the lyrics of Pete Seeger's song 'Turn, Turn, Turn' which is based on some verses from the bible book of Ecclesiastes.

Your entry can be a cover of an existing song, an original song or an instrumental. If you enter an instrumental, the title of the music should reflect the theme.

The lyrics of 'Turn! Turn! Turn!' are in the next post.

Rules
a) Ukulele should be the main instrument though other instruments are fine in addition.
b) Recorded specially for this season
c) Start and finish on Sunday as usual so 8 days.
d) Multi tracking, plugging in etc. are all OK
e) Three song limit so I can keep up with commenting. (Hopefully)
f) If you think your song fits the theme but you're not sure, it fits the theme so post anyway. No invalid posts.

Turn! Turn! Turn!
Written by Pete Seeger
based on Ecclestiastes, 3,1-8

Chorus
To Everything, turn, turn, turn
There is a Season, (turn, turn, turn)
And a time for ev'ry purpose under heaven.

A time to be born, a time to die;
A time to plant, a time to reap;
A time to kill, a time to heal;
A time to laugh, a time to weep.
Chorus

A time to build up, a time to break down;
A time to dance, a time to mourn;
A time to cast away stones,
A time to gather stones together
Chorus

A time of war, a time of peace;
A time of love, a time of hate;
A time to embrace,
A time to refrain from embracing;
Chorus

A time to gain, a time to lose;
A time to rend, a time to sew;
A time to keep silence, a time to speak;
A time of peace, I swear it's not too late.
Chorus

Excellent intro video and nice job on Turn, Turn, Turn. Should be a great Season!

Thanks, Fred. I'll respond to your PM in the morning. It's bed time now and if I'm not careful I'll wake up as a pumpkin :)

Great concept, Geoff! We should have some fascinating entries.

Not so bad with this as a Pumpkin's best Buddy !!!

Lovely theme Geoff. and darned clever to boot.Iam looking forward to your season.

This clip means so much to me, and for so many reasons.
The film is of the japanese maple tree in my parents' backyard which comes into bloom for only about 10 days each year,
always in synchronicity with my mum's birthday. I filmed this today.
The poem was written earlier this year, for Joo. For the two of us.
I leave the verses here, but clearly, it is about love overcoming. Seasons. Time. Blooming with them. And in spite of them.
I made the recitation this afternoon, and the improvised music on baritone ukulele.
Thank you Geoff for this week and the inspiration.
Pete Seeger is a hero to me. And the Bible has affected my life like no other.

Once I thought there were glaciers between us
that wouldn't melt.
That seasons and histories couldn't overcome.
I have been much better at
telling stories to myself
than to you.

Be thankful, My Love, for sadness
makes sweet music.
Loneliness brings hunger like the end of winter.
Your portrait is etched in my mind:
see how your eyes are hiding? Your face in shadow
means there must be light shining

somewhere. Where you are.
In autumn the trees shake their leaves away
to say "we are alive!" The wind sings our song.
The glacier turns to a spring; a mighty river
wherein our secret language of love flows:
the story we don't even remember or need to know.

CLosing TIme

So long Marianne: Part of a letter written by Leonard Cohen to
Marianne Ihlen which was read to her before she died.

“It said well Marianne it’s come to this time when we are really so old
and our bodies are falling apart and I think I will follow you very soon.
Know that I am so close behind you that if you stretch out your hand,
I think you can reach mine."

Cohen now over 80 years of age seems to be contemplating his mortality
more and more in his songs.

You want it darker, We kill the flame

A record for me - 00:15 in Hawaii. Taking the "time" and "change" thing very literally.

Had a discussion with my wife about U2 songs that would fit this theme, we found some others, but I ended up with this one. It was originally a Passengers song (U2 and Friends), but they have also done it themselves. I left out the Pavarotti piece this time. I added the original video of U2 on top of mine, and added some snare just for fun.

Entry No. 1: The first two songs that came to mind were covered "bigly" by Joe Cocker. Pure coincidence. Dave Mason wrote this one and a zillion people have done it. Now I have, too.

Entry No. 2: Alex Chilton and The Boxtops did this when young Alex was a tot. Joe Cocker did it, too. I think it fits the theme, since it mentions a change in relationship status and the protagonist doesn't have time to take the fast train. Well, it's worth a try ...

Wow. Going to be a great season. :)
