Is there someplace on the web that shows gauges of the various Aquila strings?

If not, can anyone supply some measurements? In particular I'd like diameters of the Nylgut 4U string set. (And everything else too, data junkie that I am, but 4U most of all.) Thank you.

Aquila does not put the gauges on the string packs. They also do not publish string tension either.

Once upon a time, long ago, I found a page on the Aquila site that had a table with the string gauges, but sadly did not bookmark it.

Look deep here: http://aquilacorde.com/

You could send a PM to Mimmo here on UU. Mimmo is the founder, president and lead engineer of Aquila and very responsive to the UU community.

I will caution you that you may need to justify your request quite well in order to obtain these deeply held secrets. :)

Ha! another data junkie ... can't have enough numbers ;)

Can't help with the 4U's I'm afraid, simply don't have any, but the Aquilas that are fitted as standard to my Brunswick tenor (gCEA) measure 26 36 30 23 under tension and the Aquilas that were fitted to my Kala concert as standard measure 26 37 32 24 not fitted. The original Aquilas on my Mahalo "pineapple" soprano measure 24 35 30 22. These were replaced by a set of Aquila 30U's (5ths tuning) measuring 28w 33 23 15 (GDAE)

Apparent inconsistencies may be the differences between under tension and slack, different production batches or even a mistake at one of the instrument factories. These instruments were bought new with Aquila Strings swing tags several years ago, so this data may not pertain to current production.

All measurements in thousandths of an inch. Multiply by 25.4 (eg .026x25.4) for millimetres

Hope this is of interest :)

Very many thanks! I assume this table refers to New Nylgut and/or Super Nylgut. The Red series strings are thinner, I think.

The numbers on that page on Aquila's site are different now. Maybe it's worth noting that, but keeping your original post for historical purposes, as it seems that Aquila may have changed something and then pushed an update to the web site.

It seems that the strings in the sets do get 'revised' over time from the ones that I bought, as the older ones sound and feel different than the newer ones of both the 'New Nylgut' and 'SuperNylgut'.

I really wish that they would just put the string gauges and tensions on the wrapper like everyone else does. It's aggravating having to dig for this info, which is not even available for all of their string sets.

Maybe it's just me that cares..../sadface/

Aquila has quite a few different types of string sets and while the Nylgut ones are similar and all have density around 1.3 the red ones have different copper content and density for each string. For tension I use the workaround of checking d'addario nyltech and Martin Premium polygut which are made by Aquila and likely have similar properties to the Nylgut family.

Ciao mimmo,

Thanks for looking into this. Please let us know when the tables will be online again.
