Hi,

I'm falling hard for the slack key sound. Ledward Kaapana is magical.

Anybody have suggestions for beginner slack key tutorials? So far the only one I've found that I like is Harry Koizumi's youtube channel. (he does great uke tutorials also!)

Thanks in advance!

Slack key is definitely magical! And you're on the right track with Ledward Kaapana. He and Bob Bozman do a great guitar video lesson available through Homespun Music. The song Slack Key Lullaby sounds great on uke.

Keola Beamer has a few videos and CD lessons for guitar also.

If you're looking for ukulele slack key specifically, check out Mark Nelson:

Uncle Mark has a book called the Uke Buke that goes along with these videos for Slack Key Ukulele.

That ought to get you started. Be sure to check on out the forum http://www.taropatch.net/forum for some great info, video and links regarding all things slack key. They even have a page dedicated specifically to slack key uke!

I took a couple of slack key ukulele workshops at the Reno and Palm Springs uke festivals; Jason Arimoto taught both of them and had a lot of insight in adapting traditional guitar slack key to ukulele (and had some great songs as handouts). He might be available to do a few Skype/Facetime lessons with you. A nice guy--and uber talented!

slack key book

How about this one:

"Slide & Slack Key Ukulele: A Collection of Songs, Licks, Tunings and Techniques to Expand the Uke's Musical Horizons Paperback" by Fred Sokolow

It's probably not a beginner's piece, but I have one tutorial video up, a version of "Pali O Ka Moa" in drop C:

and there's a link to the tab here: http://www.kaleponi.com/2013/08/03/paliokamoa-pali-o-ka-moa-tutorial/ .

Speaking of Ledward, I have a playlist of the videos I've shot of the two of us playing together: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLKRxWcC_Lftc7G4ByRpjNm79hjuZ9PrPt

For me Ozzie Kotani is "the guy" for slack key instruction. He has published a book and a couple of DVDs that really lay out the style. I think he publishes some free stuff at his website: http://www.ozziekotani.com

Thanks everyone for the resources! I was mainly looking for slack key guitar help. But the uke info should come in handy! Good reason to put a Low G on & convert one of the ukes to a slack key tuning.

I'm trying the slack key on an electric guitar because I'm tired of breaking my strings when I tune & detune my acoustic. Does this happen a lot? (& I can't go the get "another acoustic" route - I'm not "allowed" to bring another guitar in the house...HA!)

And thank you, Fran, for the wonderful links! You & Mr. Kaapana make a great duo!

Can't you make room under the bed? LOL. I finally "won" the uke and guitar deal when I said "Why don't you get another bicycle? I don't care how many you have in the garage. Here's a couple grand toward the next one."

Now I have 25 guitars according to my list (I have no idea how that happened but they must be around here somewhere) and love of my life wants yet ANOTHER motorcycle. He wants to buy it for "me".

So we've gone from "How many do you have? Why? Can't you sell a couple?" to "Yay! New Guitar Day, high five!" I also pointed out that they are all resale-able and that we could die tomorrow, and this is my only "thing". No gambling, drugs, cheating, etc. and he always has clean clothes, good food and a clean house, plus unlimited ongoing tech support. Just setting up SO's new phone (which I paid for) was too far beyond and took half a day to get just so to SO's perfectionistic OCD liking. I also work hard for my income contribution.

I do plan to sell most of my ukes and at least half the guitars, life has just intervened so they stacked up.

Find your partner's "weakness". You'll both be happy.
