Hi,

Part of me wants to buy a cheaper uke with a higher action, and practice lowering it down. How much is this a headache vs worth the effort? On ebay I can purchase one from overseas for 200 something. Or even a lower end US-made model.

Will I learn something from this, or will this be a waste? I have no experience with this at all but am partly intrigued as to how it all works...

Check out your local second-hand and charity shops. If it's just practice you want, any old guitar, mandolin or ukulele will do to try out adjusting the action. If you get it right, you'll have increased the value of the instrument, if you get it wrong ... fix it anyway. Unless you hit it with an axe you're unlikely to wreck it, so it'll always be recoverable ... win, win really ;)

YMMV

Buy a new saddle for your uke and set it up. Saddles are usually $5 or less.
