Hello Everyone.
My wife gifted me a Kala TEM for my birthday a couple of weeks ago, its been a joy.
She's been suggesting one for years but I resisted.
I was focused on Irish Traditional Music, mostly tin whistle and concertina. But its not an easy genre, at least for me.

Now we have the ukulele bug bad.
I couldn't resist buying a Donner soprano that from Amazon Prime days for $42.
My Mrs just got a Kala slot head solid cedar top with solid acacia sides
concert. She had been on mandolin.

I'm in the Gardena/Torrance area.

Happy to be here.

Welcome to UU maki!

The Kala KA-TEM is a nice starter uke and one you might end up keeping. When I first started, I purchased the KA-T model which had no pickup. Later I installed a MiSi pickup myself. 4 yrs later I still play that uke and it sounds even better now.

If you are interested in Celtic music, fellow UU brothers brimmer and UkuleleTim have some PDF files that they shared (you can use the forum search, likely for 'celtic' sans quotes), and UkuleleTim has a web site https://ukulelesecrets.org/ where has a few pages on Celtic and links to his videos, with some tutorials.

Also Li'l Rev (who is one of my favorite players) has a tutorial book for some Celtic music in his 'Fiddle Tunes for Ukulele' book:
https://www.lilrev.com/hl-fiddle-tunes-for-ukulele...

There are LOTS of UU folks and LOTS of ukulele groups and shops near the L.A., Ca area, so you are in good company here with many nearby resources...

Feel free to dig in and participate here in the forum, and best of luck to you! :) :music:

Welcome. Being in that area, you need to attend the Los Angeles International Ukulele Festival in Torrence Sept. 30th, http://www.kalakoa.com/ukulele/index.html, $45 for all the workshops and performances, a bargain, plus many booths with vendors.

(I'm sure your wife's cedar Kala is solid top but laminate acacia koa body, I have the tenor version and others here have that model too. One of the best sounding ukes Kala makes, rivaling even $1000 ukes.)

Thanks for the clarification. The Mrs. choose her model, I probably got confused on the specs. But it does sound good, fo shizzle.

Welcome to UU maki!

Thanks for links and advice Booli.
I probly won't do Irish on the Ukulele.
Right now I'm learning pop songs with easy cords.
Most likely I'll be doing jazz songs from the '20, blues, and oldtimey clawhammer tunes.
Just got Aaron Keims book for clawhammer ukulele as well as his finger picking styles book in the mail.
Next pay check we will get some of James Hills books.
That's the idea, the result may or may not resemble the goal!

We have tickets to the Los Angeles International Ukulele Festival.

Looking forward to seeing everyone.

I'll be the tall aging nerd with the beautiful wife. :D

Kinda wish forum members had T-Shirts so I can spot other members at the L.A. Uke Festival!
