I have some songs I strum through, then pick the melody through.

When I transpose the key, how do I adjust the notes to go with the new key?

Example, the simple chant Radhe Bol.
Chords D/G/A
Notes: F#/E/G/D/C#/B/A

Transpose to Key of G, so G/C/D
Then what do the notes change to??

Basically, if I've got this right, the notes are whatever is in the key signature.

In key of D you will get a sharp C & F, in key of G you will get a sharp F, key of F a flat B, etc.

Edit: See below/next post.

The notes will jump the same interval as the key. D to G is a Perfect Fourth, or 5 half steps away (or 5 frets). All the other notes would jump the same.

F# to B
E to A
G to C
D to G
C# to F#
B to E
A to D

Or you can think of the notes in terms of the full scale...

D E F# G A B C# D
1 2 3 4 5 6 7 1

Becomes

G A B C D E F# G
1 2 3 4 5 6 7 1

Both approaches get you to the same place. One causes you to think note by note, the other requires you to know which notes are sharp or flat in each scale.

Oooooh! Thank you both! I've wondered this for some weeks, have Googled and Googled, and here you could tell me just like that! Will experiment with this today. Much appreciated :)

Holy! I just worked through this for various keys and I GET IT!!!! Woohoo!! This really opens my world. Thanks so much, uke1950 and Choirguy!!
