That title should have read Original December Song Competition

OK that time of year that you either love or dread is coming around again.
Write a new original end of year season song for this competition.
Post it here.
One song only please.
I would like the 'winner' to be chosen by the participants.
So if you enter a song you must be willing to vote for the other song that you like best. You can vote for one song only by PMing me.
No prize - only the satisfaction of being picked by a majority of your song writing peers. Yep. If you don't vote you can't win. I really want this to be decided by the consensus of ALL participants.
This also means I can enter my own competition as I have been working on a little song.
The song can be about any aspect of this time of year - positive or negative.
Entries close on December 20 and hopefully your votes will come in so that the winner can be annouced on December 25.

thanks for running this competition Brian.
the poor old contests board has had tumbleweeds blowing through it for so long.
will very much look forward to folks' songs and following the thread.

OK I'll get the ball rolling and set the bar nice and low.
This is meant to be a kind of 'hicksville' kids Christmas song based around the nativity scene.

Little baby Jesus in a stable born x2
Lying in the manger safe and warm
Little Baby Jesus in a stable born

Little baby Jesus heard the donkey bray x2
Donkey gonna carry Jesus safely away
Little baby Jesus heard the donkey bray

Little baby Jesus saw the shepherds bow x2
Whole wide world got a new King now
Little baby Jesus saw the shepherds bow

Little baby Jesus saw the three wise men x2
They followed the star to Bethlehem
Little baby Jesus saw the three wise men

Little baby Jesus a Savior new
Came to die for me and you
The good news that grew and grew
Look at the date it must be true

Little baby Jesus heard the angels sing x2
They were singing just for him
Little baby Jesus heard the angels sing
Little baby Jesus made the angels sing

I just saw your post tonight and this came out in a rush. I hope others can do some happier songs.

An important and really fine song Alan. Thank you!

For all participants (and I sure hope we get many)

ANY subject about this time of year is fair game. It does not have to be Christmas related.

Can we please put the lyrics of our songs in the posts.

Hullo - been a while but I've decided to do more than lurk and play along with some of these ukeing larks on UU. :)

In that case, my entry should hopefully qualify as it is called Winter.

Lyrics to help guide you through my impenetrable English accent... ;)

Deep inside me is the smell of freshly baked bread
And the woven woollen colours wrapped around your hands
and the white ground
Sparkling, the way childhood memories do,
Expanding in an oven, fearless in the safe hands of the snow
Now we're falling down

What is it that wakes a person to the world?
I know it wasn't the snow
It fell in silence so cold

I'll know when it's time, no matter where I am
There'll be flowers in my window and a sadness in the
corners of my smile
And the birds have flown for the winter
But they always come back again, it's not an end or a beginning

What is it that wakes a person to the world?
I know it wasn't the snow
It fell in silence so cold

Something woke me up
In the deep dark of the night
In the silence and cold, cold, cold

Can it be a parody? The leader of our group just wrote one, "All I Want for Christmas is One More Uke" that she dedicated to me because of my UAS. The group is going to do it for this years Holiday Show at the Culver City Senior Center.

I'm really after new original songs.
I'd love to hear it though - why not post it in the Links and Videos board?

Thanks for joining us and bringing this little gem.
You see I think two minutes is the ideal length for a song.
And this is such a terrific performance and the song is so well crafted!

I can do that after the show, but in the mean time, here are the lyrics.

All I want for Christmas is one more uke, one more uke, one more uke.
Please Santa Santa bring me one more uke and I’ll play a song for you.

My life is good. I got my friends and I don’t need more stuff.
But in the ukulele world one just ain’t e-nough. So

All I want for Christmas is one more uke, one more uke, one more uke.
Please Santa Santa bring me one more uke and I’ll play a song for you.

I got big ones, small ones, hang-on-the-wall ones. Uku-leles ga-lore.
And I love to strum, strum each one. BUT... I still want more...more...more!

All I want for Christmas is one more uke, one more uke, one more uke.
Please Santa Santa bring me one more uke and I’ll play a song for you.

LA-LA-LA, LA-LA-LA, LA-LA-LA La la la la la la la la LA-LA-LA and I’ll play a song for you.

All this multiplyin’ I’d explain it if I could.
But in this crazy world we live they make me feel so good. So

All I want for Christmas is one more uke, one more uke, one more uke.
Please Santa Santa bring me one more uke and I’ll play a song for you. One more!

Yes, This is funny because it's true. I've got my eye on a clear Kala Waterman....

I wanted to join the contest just so I could have a vote, but I actually kind of like the song that came out. I wrote it during a pretty crummy week, if you can’t tell by the lyrics, but sometimes that’s what Christmas is, a chance to take a moment to find some peace and joy despite your circumstances.

Here are the words:

Two Flat tires in less than a week
A hospital bill like a slap in the cheek
I think the kids are fighting, I can hear them screaming down the hall

The baby’s sick I can hear her hacking
We’ve gotta fix the car, but the money’s lacking
Tuition’s due a week ago, How can we afford presents this year?

But it’s Christmas and we’re together
It’s Our favorite time of the year
Let’s put all our stress aside for a moment
And try to find some peace and good cheer

Chaos and stress are the themes of our theme song
It’s so hard to breathe when everything’s gone wrong
But over 2000 years ago, a baby was born in Bethlehem

He said He’d make our burdens lighter
He’s the Prince of Peace and his arms are wider
Than broken cars and fevers, or anything else the world can throw our way

Yeah, it’s Christmas and we’re together
It’s Our favorite time of the year
Let’s get the kids in the van and go look at lights
We’ll try to find some peace and good cheer.

But it’s Christmas and we’re together
It’s Our favorite time of the year
Let’s put on Elf and drink some hot cider
We’ll try to find some peace and good cheer

Gosh Martins! So frigging fantastic! That could be your electronic Christmas Thing!
Enjoyed this SO much.
Thanks for bringing this bit of joy along.

This song has been bouncing round my head for months. Had the idea a little while back to link it for Christmas and this thread gave me the push to put it together.

A little note for context as it seems a bit heavy:

I'm 26 in January. I'm married, I've got a 3 year old boy, I've been moved out of my dad's house for near enough 5 years and been working for more than 10. But I still have to pinch myself that I'm an adult. Find myself doing normal, "grown up" stuff and wondered how I got here. And then my anxiety asks me how I'm possibly coping as well as I seem to be.

This song voices those feelings, and I felt the need to have the rhythm and the vocals sound a bit upbeat because I am happy to be where I am. Just dunno what I did to deserve it.

It's Christmas Time Again
I'm putting up the tree
Wondering when it'll fall down on me

And it's stressing me
Tired of having too much
Month at the end of the money

I haven't got a clue
Muddling my way through
Because I don't know what to do

It's worse this time of year
We're just playing house
Because we don't know what we're doing here

I'm getting fed up
Sat in traffic for an hour
Burning fuel just going nowhere

I feel just like a fraud
It's like I'm* the guy
From Once in a Lifetime

Cooking a nice meal
My son's goofing around
It's such a wonderful sound

It's worse this time of year
We're just playing house
Because we don't know what we're doing here

It's not all it seems
I'm just wondering when
I'll wake up from this dream

It's just my chemistry
Running round my brain
Saying these things don't happen to me

It's Christmas Time Again
Living in the present
Wondering when it'll all cave in

It's worse this time of year
We're just playing house
Because we don't know what we're doing here

Good song. I'm twice your age and I still feel that way.

Terrific song Ryan. Thanks for bringing it!
Yes been there and felt the same but I started off even younger. You're on the uphill section buddy - but enjoy your children when they're young and uncomplicated.
I'm now on the downhill section - don't really know how I made it over the crest - but it is nice to be coasting at last.
Don't want to get to the bottom too soon mind you.

Yes, take your time getting to the bottom, Pa. Matter of fact, tap the brakes a little.

I haven’t posted in a contest for a long time but when I saw this Christmas song event I thought I’d submit this song I wrote a while back. It was inspired by the Salvation Army bell ringers and I call it, There Really Was A First Noel.

Lyrics:

There Really Was A First Noel
By Jon Clayburn

Verse 1
One cold December night on the street I saw a man,
Beside a red kettle he rang his bell.
It’s chimes rang in the darkness, a message of assurance,
The song of the birth of a king.

Chorus
There really was a first Noel on that silent, holy night,
When it came upon a midnight clear.
As with gladness men of old came with angels from the realms of glory,
To see the infant holy, infant lowly.

Verse 2
Some people just walk by, others stop and leave a dollar,
Most don’t hear the message of the bell.
Midst holiday worry and Christmas shopping hurry,
Somehow we’ve missed what Christmas is for.

Verse 3
Well it’s not just the bell of the man beside the kettle,
All creation joins in the song.
Of how our Heavenly Father, the lord of all creation
‘Cause he loves us gave us his son.

Chorus 2
So O come all ye faithful, good Christians now rejoice,
O sing a song of Bethlehem.
There’s a song in the air, go and tell it on the mountain,
Now is born the divine Christ child.
