How to remove stuck tuners

Unscrewed the friction tuner knobs. Now what? They don't seem to want to unscrew from the other side? I tried holding one side with pliars and twisting the knobs counterclockwise. No go on any of them. What am I missing?

They look pretty standard to me. Just put the screw back in a few turns, not quite all the way and give it a gentle tap. I would have first tried with the back of the screwdriver.
They look like they might be OK with a bit of a scrub and smear of oil or grease on the screws.
