Hi all, if a string snaps due to excessive tightening, should I use a string up or down in diameter? I know this is probably an oversimplification, but I am trying out the fishing line approach on a beater uke. There is not any jagged edges for it to catch on, it appears to be just related to the tension.

Thanks!
Ben

Was it a fluoro or nylon 'string' (er, fishing line) that snapped?

If you’re using strings meant for your uke size, in the tuning recommended for those strings, then you just have a defective string. It happens.

Don’t overtighten excessively.

If the string has a smaller diameter (actually weight, which can be changed by either changing diameter or density, but close enough), then it will require less tension to tune it to the same note.

Go with a smaller line.

Thanks! Jer, I went with the smaller string and it went perfectly!
