You can measure the action of an ukulele with the thickness gauges that probably are in your pocket or purse. Use newish ones that don't show wear, obviously. These numbers are for U.S. coins only. If you are elsewhere, Google might get you local equivalents.

A penny is 1.55 mm thick. A nickel is 1.95 mm. A dime is 1.35 mm. A quarter is 1.75 mm. A half dollar is 2.15 mm. A dollar coin is 2.00 mm.

this is a GREAT find! :)

so in my pre-morning-coffee thinking -

2 dimes would give a 2.70mm height, which is a good starting point for me to measure action @ the 12th fret...does this seem right?

I am often most comfortable with a 2.60-2.65mm height at the 12th, as per the factory setup on my Fluke and Flea ukes.

This is very cool. Thanks. I'm stealing it....
