Greetings from the land of the long white cloud, Aotearoa New Zealand.

I'm an ould fat fella, who's managed to buy 3 ukes, but who's been thwarted in learning even the basics. Did a series of lessons when I lived in Vancouver, but the instructor wasn't great. I'm also a nail gobbler: I bite 'em to the nubs. I also have comically small hands for a dude: between XS sized gloves for women and men, with stubby little fingers.

Aside from "don't bite your nails" (duh), tips or suggestions would be appreciated.

Welcome, you don't need nails to play so that is not an issue. To learn chord shapes and changing from one to another download "Uncle Rods Bootcamp".

Welcome aboard. :)

It's good to keep the nails short on the fretting hand. ;)

As said above, you don't need to use finger nails to pick with, I just use my thumb.

(Best way to get started is to try to play some easy tunes that you like.)
