Leaving from Toronto (Canada) end of the week, stopping in Nashville soaking in some country music then Dallas / Forthworth , Austin, San Antonio , New Orlean for more jazz and blue. Oh yes Graceland too!

UU is a great place to ask for travel tips.

Nashville - I plan to drop in on JohnnyFootStamp. Please give me your performance time and place ! I will be there this Sunday night.

Is there any places / festival I should visit in these areas that are of interest to Uke players? Of course the real reason of this post is - is there any uke / luthier I should search while I am there? I waited till now to pop the question so I can't place any order in time for delivery. ;) It doesn't hurt to LOOK!

Return trip may be a detour to Eldery if I come home empty handed! ;)

Thank You!

That sounds like a lot of fun. I have no advice what-so-ever, but I will be interested in what you have to say about it when you are back, as I want to do a very similar trip this summer with UWC as the first stop. I hope that you have a great trip.

Sounds like a great trip. I would enjoy seeing a running travel log of your adventures. Every stop you mention should have some great music. I am not sure if Southcoast Ukulele has a retail store in the the New Orleans area, but I would inquire about visiting Dirk. Seems like a really nice guy and has great strings. You have a great time and take lots of pictures.

SOUTHCOAST ? Did you say Southcoast and Dirk? Oh my, I better email him. I am changing my suitcase from small to extra large now. I hope downupdave doesn't see this post. He will hand me a long list of what strings to buy.

Hello!

No we have no storefront here; while New Orleans has a few excellent players, this area is not exactly a frenzy of Ukulele activity. People do stop by here in Mandeville (across Lake Pontchartrain from the city) so you're welcome to come by if it works for you. I'd need some advance notice. At the least, I can, as Dave mentioned, give you some tips on where to find Ukulele performers as well as people and places in general, and yes, we have a few strings. One caveat; I am undergoing a seemingly endless series of medical tests right now and if you were to arrive tomorrow, I'd have to decline. Hopefully things will improve shortly.

And in the deep south in general Ukuleles just aren't as prominent as in places like the West Coast, or even Florida. There used to be a nice place in Dallas, UkeLady music. It might still be there but I doubt it. The store lists only one William King Tenor in stock and that might be an oversight.

The Ukulele Lady was Noel Tardy who I think had a hand in every Ukulele festival in Texas. I attended one a few years back, and it was a first rate affair all the way. Unfortunately, she passed away in November. Here is an article on Noel:

and here is the notice of her passing by the Dallas Ukulele Headquarters.

Contacting them for an oversight of things in the area will likely be very worthwhile.

So happy to hear from you. I will be in New Orlean on Feb 8 and 9. I heard it’s festival time
I hope you are feeling better and that this is just temporary situation
Please keep well and thank you for the suggestions

Brenda, you can visit the Ukudelics page for information about events around Nashville where they will be performing.
https://www.ukedelics.com/events/

Of check out the Nashville Ukulele Society’s Facebook page (if you are a member—I’m not, so I can’t see the page).
https://www.facebook.com/groups/8246686315/

or check here for info about Bob Tigert and Bob’s Your Uncle

The only local instrument builder (I know of) is Jonathan Mann. He builds awesome electric ukuleles. I don’t think he has a storefront.

If there is more happening here I’d love to learn about it.

Thank you for the Nashville links. I will be there this Sunday.

If you are making your way back through Indiana on your way to Elderly you need to stop at the other Nashville, Mainland Ukes in Nashville Indiana, then head up to Fort Wayne Indiana and stop at the Sweetwater Music Campus.

I can totally turn this into shopping plus meeting the local UU members trip!
Thanks for the great information

Brenda,
I am sure you are on a tight schedule but I would invite you to attend the PUPS (Pensacola Ukulele Players Society) in Pensacola, FL on Saturday morning Feb 10th at Blues Angel Music. If you can’t you can’t and I understand, but you would be welcome. It would be great to meet another UU member.

Is that in the Florida panhandle area?

What time? Address please. I will PM you if I can make it

Blues Angel Music, 657 N Pace Blvd, Pensacola, FL 32505, We meet at 10:30 AM every Saturday. If you can make it let me know and I will forward the music we will be doing that day.

Blues Angel Music is a general music store supporting local school bands, has lots of guitars, amps, etc and mostly entry to mid grade ukuleles. We are fortunate they let us meet there, they are fortunate also because we buy stuff.
