hi, i have this horrible feeling that i am quite possibly the only person in Budapest, Hungary with a Uke. But if you are out there in Buda or Pest (or dammit just in the country will do,) in need of some ukulele lovin support and jams then let me know.

Wow, that must be a bit special indeed. How did you get to play the uke, what do you play, and what instruments are popular to play in Hungary if it's not the ukulele?
I sincerely hope you find some people to jam with (or get lessons if you need them) because people is what makes music fun. Enlighten us!

Hi, grammy, welcome to UU! :)

Lately some members here have been hosting "minijams" over stickam.com, which is like having your own video chatroom. In order to stream, you need a webcam, but you can always join in the text chat and just watch the live streams if you don't have a cam. There's been talk of having some that are more convenient for those in European time zones. Or you could always host one yourself and announce it here.

Thanks for the replies guys. i will deffo give that vid cam thing a try. I play guitar, bass, mandolin, and uke of course, i come from wigan originally, the home of George Formby so the uke and the banjolele are kinda normal to me. loads of the old fellas had them when i was growing up.

Over here in Bp there is a really thriving music scene and the overall quality of musicianship is truly excellent. there are a lot of your standard type instruments, fiddles and mandolins are really popular, but folk-wize they have some amazing stuff too. the tradition is largely gypsy led so we get lots of fast frantic balkan music.

cimbalom is popular, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m2RAPUBCx6s&feature=related

Citera is cool too (a type of zither) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VAeYt-swWG0&NR=1

there is a kind of percussion cello called a gardon that you hit with a stick

Hi, I'm from Budapest. I don't have a uke yet, but am planning to buy one. Currently I'm "emulating" an uke by capoing my classical guitar on the 5th fret. Maybe you could give me a hint where in Budapest I could buy a uke and a case for it?

Hi Thomann music in Germany have a nice selection of Ukuleles. Blue moon mahogany ukuleles are made by Hora in Romania.
There are a few places on the web in France that send Ukuleles out.

hello there! are you still in budapest, still playing uke, and still looking for some solidarity? (it's been three years since i know it's a long shot!) i just moved here to pest and would love to jam with other ukulele players. please be in touch if you are still interested!

Hey there Budapest UU, did you ever find other players in your town?
I know you posted this in 2009, but i just searched Hungary Ukulele and your post came up.
I am working on an Arts Management course and the TRAFO center is our case study.

I am going to suggest they host ukulele meetups because that always makes everyone happier.
Just doing a little research. Hope you found your uke people.

Wishing you Good luck. Ukes tend to "grow" on people, so if you start it, they will come. Both my maternal grandparents, and my wife's paternal grandfather are from Pecz. They escaped through the mountains to come to the U.S. Surnames are Kovach and Sova.
