Hey gang - my brother in law was over the other day and picked up my uke. He played bass in a band probably about 20 years ago - really seemed to enjoy playing an instrument again. Anyway - I wanted to pick him up a cheap uke for Christmas to see if it's something he'll get into. Any reccos at that price?

BTW - him and my sister just had triplets - so he probably won't have time to pick up the uke for another 20 years - but that's ok ;o)

I would recommend the Kala KA-S

or the Lanikai LU-21

Both are amazing starter ukuleles for the price, can't get better for what you are paying for.

I started with the Kala KA-S, and still have it, but it's been a year and am now crazing a new one.

There are alot of songs you can play with it, and I'm sure the person receiving it will be satisfied.

UCJ mentioned some good ones. You might want to get him something that looks fun. Like a Kala Kiwi or a Mahalo Les Paul.

quick question? Do you know what difference there is between the LANIKAI LU-21 and a Lanakai LU-11? I see a local music shop here carries the Lanakai LU-11 for $50.

Thanks again for the input!

i'll second the Lanikai LU21 - great bright little Uke, and mine arrived flawlessly finished, nice intonation and with aquila strings on it!

Lacks a bit of sustain, as laminated ukes can do, but it has a real punch. I love mine. Has become my bedroom Uke for late night "i cant sleep" practice, or fun first thing!

I have a Lanikai LU-21 and love it. The LU-11 has a Nato fretboard, while the LU-21 has a Rosewood fret board. And the 21 has the white binding.

Lanikai LU 21 all the way, sounds good, plays great. looks like a Uke. Got mine on Amazon, clicked the free shipping option which said may take 14 days, only took 4 and there was a weekend in there.

Maybe check out a Makala - I'd say that they're generally regarded as the best overall value for a uke under $50 - they sound and play great.

good luck!
Got to agree, the Makalas are very hard to beat in their price range. I have a tenor and my grandkids each have the dolphin bridge sopranos, all sound great and play well. Check out MusicGuyMic's ebay store, great service at a very good price.
