I've been looking for a baritone uke, but really haven't found any that appeal to me. So I'm thinking about getting another tenor and stringing it up to be in baritone (DGBE) tuning.

I know that Aquila makes a DGBE Tenor set of strings, but I'm not fond of wound strings very much, so I was wondering if It would be safe to get a Worth Brown Baritone set and put them on a tenor ukulele. Would the tension be okay? Or should I look into making a mixed set from classical guitar strings?

Thanks!

I haven't found the tenor DGBE set for sale anywhere... Wound or otherwise. Where did you see it?

We order the Aquila DGBE tenor strings from JustStrings.com for my husband's ukes.

He likes re-entrant tuning, so he swaps the low D with an E from an extra set.

I have used the Aquila DGBE tenors on one of my tenors to give me additional key playing options.
I know of some folks who switch the 3rd & 4th strings to make a low D tuning.
I like the high D as the whole uke is a little lower.
It is a nice fit with my High G and Low G tenors.

I thought they were low D stock... odd. I'll order a few packs and monkey around. Thanks!

Aquila have both re-entrant and low-D DGBE sets for Tenor.

I have the re-entrant DGBE currently on my Kala Archtop tenor. The acoustic sound is quite gentle, so I mainly use it electronically:

Though it shouldnt be a problem on an acoustically louder tenor.

With the re-entrant DGBE, you only get 1 wound string (C), which isn't too bad. It buzzes a bit on the first few frets though for me.

I tried Aquila baritone strings on a Tenor before. The tension was FAR too loose.

Any string experts out there that can figure out a set from singles or classical guitar strings to make a set of all nylon strings that will work on a tenor scale and keep good tension?

I don't have any exact details to offer, but do a Google search for "string tension calculator" There are plenty of sites available that will tell you what you need to know. Also do a search for "tenor string tension" and plug those numbers along with your scale length into the calculator. After that, go shopping. www.daddario.com and others sell singles and can accomodate whatever your heart desires.

Here's something to get you started.
