Amazing images of the sun

The Daily Mail has some astounding pictures of the sun here on this page:

These were taken by NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory. I've been following the SDO ever since the satellites were launched and am continually astounded and delighted by the images they return.

At the bottom of the page you'll see a short video showing the solar tsunami that raced across the surface of the sun: 100,000 km high, travelling 250 km/sec.

I am truly humbled by these videos and images; humbled at the sheer size and magnificence of our sun, by its power and beauty, by its fiercesomeness and uncaring but grand violence.

I am also humbled by the incredible technical and scientific achievement the SDO is. This to me represents the greatness to which science can and does aspire: to open new frontiers, push back the boundaries, and look into the heart of the universe to reveal its ancient secrets.
