For half a year now, I've been playing an Oscar Schmidt OU2 concert.
I also play bass in several bands, and now I want to take a uke on stage. Time to go electric.

So, last weekend a friend and I took the train to visit The Uke Boutique, Amsterdam's Specialist Ukulele Store. It was a beautifull sunny day, great for walking in our nation's capital, and a great day to look for a ukulele.

The Uke Boutique is in walking distance from the centre in a very hip part of Amsterdam. The folks at the store a very friendly and love ukes, music and everything surrounding it. There was enough choice and the owner set me down on a comfy couch to try out an Ortega, a Kala and an aNueNue first.
I was determinded to let sound and playability, and not looks, be the main factors in deciding which uke I liked the best. After playing the aNueNue, I decided that the best looking uke was also the best sounding.
I tried the Ortega and the aNueNue over the amp in the store, and I was delighted to hear the Papa II sound just as warm with amplification as without it.

The Papa II is a mahogany laminate, and has a cutaway body. It has a matte finish with little dancing men burned or etched in the wood. I love how that looks.
The uke is very playable and is has a warm, round tone. Even when I play it very quitly (like in the middle of the night, and don't want to wake anyone up) it still sounds rich.

It also comes with Aquila Nyglut strings and a padded gigbag.
When I got home and unpacked the uke, it was still nicely in tune.

When I showed it to my girlfriend, I declared that I did not need to buy another uke ever. But... that was before I decided I was afraid to take my beautiful new uke on a flying vacation.

So.. one week later, I order a pearl white Makala Dolphin. Once that arrives, I will really be done buying ukes.. right?

Enough talk, here are some pics.

Nice uke!! The aNueNue's have good looks. I've been to that store too! Unfortunately they don't sell K-brands (yet) and most of the ukes they sell are laminates, but it seems they're slowly adding the known brands too like Martin. The owners are indeed very friendly. I bought only a few songbooks.

They also just got some Takamines. And I was suprised to see a few banjeleles there as well.

He Ukeeku,
I read that review, right after I bought the aNueNue.
Then I kept reading your blog, it is now in my favorites list.

Welcome to the club :) I've got a koa tenor Anuenue, when testing out the ukes at Elderly, I felt it even beat out of the Kamaka they had out on display. Once it breaks in a little, it'll sound even better!

Sounds great!

Just ordered the Anuenue Papa III Tenor Electric, i had the chance to try it out when i was in Thailand but the price was a bit high and i was out of cash, so i looked it up and decided to order it from Ebay, i paid 300$ + shipping fees, and now i am waiting :)

Nice! I hope you'll enjoy yours as much as I enjoy mine.
I'm still in love with it.

Good luck during the waiting!

just got it, i hope to right a full review soon.
sound is of much better quality than my Kala, tones are much more accurate and with a "sweeter" sound.
the general volume it generates is quiet low, much lower than my smaller Kala, it surprised me.
when i plug it to my acoustic amp is when the full awesome sound really comes out, it sounds wonderful!
overall very happy, still need to switch it to low G but i think i'll keep it this way a little longer so i can decide later what's better.
