Hi!

I've just tuned up one of my sopranos to D tuning in order to play some older songs, in particular from the 20's.

Any recommendations for ukulele songbooks for that era that are in D tuning, preferably with CD included?

So far, I've found the book "Irving Berlin Songs Arranged for the "Uke" by Roy Smeck" online, which looks terrific.

Thanks!

Ian Chadwick (who is on here as ichadwick) has a huge collection of vintage uke music, basically scanned songbooks from the era- many of them are in D: http://www.vintageukemusic.com/

The price for the two DVDs is more than worth it, especially for songs I never knew existed and for the artwork.

Wow, what an amazing website! ::love:
That's more than I was hoping for! Thank you so much!!!!!

Fairly old thread, but after putting my 1920s Washburn soprano into D tuning (it just sounds much more alive than in C tuning), I was looking for the same thing Lalz was hunting for. :) Just placed my order with Ian (he now offers an USB stick, too)!

I replied to a previous post about vintage uke books. I received no response from them:

Have a copy of:
Hit Parade Extras for Ukulele, Edward Morris & co., - Fair to Good, cover tape
Ukulele Ike, Collection for the Ukulele No. 3, Miller Music Corp. - Good to VG Condition
Seville Ukulele Simplified Illustrated Method and Song Folio - Good-VG Shape
Note: All D tuning

Ian sent the USB stick within not even five working days. I was floored by how fast it got here from Canada. I think he'd been busy (perhaps ill?) for some time, so you might want to try contacting him again. I'd love a scan of that Ukulele Uke book! :)

You can play the songs you play in C6 tuning in D6 tuning. They'll just be a tone higher if you use the same fingering.

If you're chording, they'll sound a bit brighter in D6, as Mivo pointed out, but you can read the same chord charts in either tuning and you'll be in the same key. You could even have a ukulele duet with one uke in C6 and one in D6.

D in C6 tuning is 2225 and in D6 tuning is 0003.
A in C6 tuning is 2100 and in D6 tuning is 4322.
G in C6 tuning is 0232 and in D6 tuning is 3211.

Better yet: get the USB stick with the extras... ;-)

Thanks for the plug. I also have a free PDF file to make a chord transposition wheel here:
