36th Season of the Ukulele: Season of the Damned - Halloween Week

This is amazing. My favorite so far, and they've all been smashing!

Here is my contribution this week. An original song I wrote a few years back on my Steel Strung Baritone Ukulele.

LYRICS
Bright Shone the Moon

She saddled the grey horse and patted the bay,
** Bright shone the moon over valley and tor,
Though her true love had warned her to keep well away,
*** Full shone the moon on all hallows’ e’en.

When she left behind the wide open plain, **
She set off at a trot down the shadowy lane. ***

When she arrived at the edge of the copse, **
She saw a white owl alight in the tree tops. ***

“Go back, go back!” cried the hoot of the owl, **
She was deep in the wood when she heard the first howl. ***

Eyes white with terror her mount it sped on, **
Till the very last breath in its body was gone. ***

Alone, all alone, she stood her ground. **
But the forest was silent, except for one sound. ***

At dawn her true love held her in his embrace,
Long gone that moon over valley and tor.
His bloody red fingers stroking her pale face.
And the sun it shone bright on all hallows.

I guess I should tag this as a bonus entry too then, as it's for the other contest... But here's Scream by The Misfits...

Nicely done.

here is a bit of recycling (doing my bit for cyberspace lol) here is a BONUS song has been uploaded in the past, one of my favourite songs and i am pleased with my playing and singing (for once)
Cheers for hosting a ghoulish week Dr Peewee

I remember this from the earlier season. You did really good job on it.

This is by the late Vic Chesnutt.
Takes me back to my childhood, when we had homemade costumes.

What if Carrie had a little brother?

...I want to be a vampire for Halloween
Mama makes a cape on the sewing machine...

Good song and good video.

An old one, with animation!

Another old one, with most of the lyrics by James Lileks:

Two fun songs here.

Bonus from the 23rd Season. One of my favorite ghost songs.

It's a lovely, if sad, story. Well sung and the baritone sounds just right.

Thank you
Jazzbanjorex

Excellent choice and well sung.

Did someone say MISFITS?
I'm in- Official entry.
Sometimes you just need to play a little punk rock and yell your head off...
with your ukulele.
I better go to bed

Another good fun video.

SCAAARY STUFF here for Halloween! If my intro doesn't chill your bones (all copyrights to the ghost of MJ) and is you can handle my scary ukulele playing, don't click off before the 2:40 mark! That's where I dance, which is truly terrifying!

This video had actual production costs! The red jacket cost me $7.50 at the local Goodwill.\

You obviously had fun doing this one. Great stuff.

OK here it is : Ghost Riders in the Sky
Notice the Orange Halloween Cow prop and Western Shirt.
Double duty song also a tribute to my dad
George Long and the 101 Ranch Boys.

Ooh I am going to predict that the Junior Judge is going to like all this cowboy business. Best "yips" I've heard in years too!

Bob Dylan song but it has been done by Nick, Kylie, Shane, Blixa and Mick
so it should be dark enough for you... or at least a little bit provocative.

WGY does Kylie..great song and great double dose of the old effects package makes for a haunting number indeed.

I will again predict that horse content and a spooky story will make this an easy sell to the Junior Judge, it certainly worked on the old one. Great song Berni, really compelling stuff. Steel strings though, I don't know, is your Baritone dressed as a guitar for halloween?

Ok. So not only is this the first time I'm posting a bonus, but it is also pretty much my first original song!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XPznuAcoC9c
your first bonus is bonus #13!. And that's one more song than I've ever written, once you got rolling it came out nice and smoothly. Funny song. I commend you on your decision to remain among we not-as-handsome mortals.
Uh-Oh, more videos since I was here last...

Here's a simple one I've wanted to figure out for a while. Funny how even hosting a season can motivate you to learn songs..
Teenage Werewolf by The Cramps They played the Peppermint Lounge in NYC every Halloween for a while..

That was awful, who let this guy in? Don't quit your day job, fellah.

Nice, made me google it, now I've added Steve Goodman to my list.

who ya gonna call?

The effect of this to me was of background music to an old 405 line TV drama. Very effective and cleverly done.

heres an old one i did for Ukisociety's contest a while back

i was amazed to see how fast it originally was, when i do it live now it is much slower

Good song. Well done.

here's one i did a while back...still looking for a new entry!

Dave, you always come up trumps. Loved the effect on this.

Ok, so I was trying to look as ghosty as possible, and hack my way through this song, like hacking my way through the jungle with a butter knife, anyway, here it is, by The White Stripes, one of my favorites, "Little Ghost."

The faded ghost look was very effective.

It's many years since I heard this song. Well sung.

The usual WGY production values and an excellent song to boot.

What a good song! To me it somehow captures the feel of Dartmoor. That kind of eerieness somehow suits the South West better than my part of the country.

I'm not familiar with the Cramps but I liked the way you did this one.

That was an excellent song. Steve Goodman was a fine songwriter. Pity he went so soon. You sang it really well.

Ha, great interpretation... very cunning to omit a shout of "Ghostbusters" from the chorus... it totally makes for a different song. Nice one Krabbers.
you may have noticed, i tend to leave out a lot of stuff in my songs. less words less chords, equals less mistakes

ok i think i have left comments albeit short ones on the YT pages to help keep the thread tidy

great entries so far

I thought I'd try and catch up with the official entries this morning so it's time to load up the Playlist and... go... go...

xommen: My favourite of yours that I've heard so far.

myrnaukelele: Quality strumming with the thumbed bass notes.

~dave~~wave~: Must be the winner of the spookiest location award... i dare you to go back and record a bonus track at night ;)

Jazzbanjorex: Very nice, excellent solo picking.

TCK: Yay, The Misfits! Brilliant.

Joko: LOL!

krabbers: I've already commented on this but I love it so I'm commenting again :)

caroljean: White Stripes! Great choice, nicely done.

000Kanaka000: Yeeeeeeeeeee haaaaaaaaaa!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

wee_ginga_yin: I'm slightly scared... spooky video!

Barbablanca: Another excellent original my friend! (RE Up the Hills to Shimla... your originals are piling the competence pressure);)

strumsilly: Perfect voice :)

I've lent an ear to some of the bonus tracks too but work beckons... but there's some great stuff in there!
I'll hopefully have a track to post in the next couple of days.

Nick and Kylie were into that Goth stuff once apon a time. Where the wild roses grow
borrows heavily from the pre-raphelite painting Ophelia by Millais

The usual WGY production values and an excellent song to boot.

OK head for that backroom cupboard of yours and dig out those
high lace Dr Martin's bovver boots and give it a good kicking:eek:ld:

two old ones

RARE UNSEEN FOOTAGE OF THE HOWLIN' WOLFMAN OF WORP-LES-DON.

WE WERE LUCKY ENOUGH TO BE ABLE TO GET OUR CAMERA'S INTO HIS CAVE. IT PROVIDED MOST EXCELLENT ACOUSTICS.

HE'S SEEN HERE SINGING ONE OF HIS MANY OLD WOLVERINE FOLK SONGS FROM THE OLD COUNTRY.

ROUGHLY TRANSLATED FROM THE ANCIENT WOLVERINE LANGUAGE
"I AINT GOT'S ME NO WOMAN, COS MY BREATH STINK'S LIKE A BADGER'S BACKSIDE"

HE IS SEEN HERE PLAYING AN INSTRUMENT NOT UNLIKE A MODERN DAY UKULELE, PROBABLY HAND CARVED FROM A GIANT REDWOOD USING A SHARPENED THIGH BONE

and

sorry bout this,

I think I have been watching too many zombie movies

one of the songs from my upcoming zombie opera

1 2 3 4
killing zombies by the score
5 6 7 8
once were alive but now they are late
9 10 11 12
i wont get time to put up that shelf

Great fun Krabbers.

I wonder what a Wolf-man's blues would really be about:

Don't think being a werewolf's easy,
I hate all this howling at the moon (x2)
And going round sniffing asses,
Makes me feel such a buffoon!

I hate waking up naked,
In the middle of the wood (x2)
And those cops sure get suspicious,
When you're covered all in blood.

It's a painful transformation,
That we were-folk undergo (x2)
But not as embarrassing as my cousin,
Who they put in a dog show!

;)

Hahaha thats brilliant Krabbers.

As I had an idea for a song to do, I just recorded that. I like to play U2 Songs, so I tried to find a song by them that fit this theme, and I think that is this song: Beautiful Ghost.
I did not use as long an intro as the U2 song has, I think that would end up boring ;-).
This song is a Joshua Tree outtake. The lyrics are the words of a poem written by William Blake - "Hear the Voice of the Bard".
Anybody Interested in the Original see here:
U2 - Beautiful Ghost
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wSSik3TooAM
By the way really not a costume person ;-).

Nicely played - I've been experimenting with plugging in the ukulele myself lately and the tone you've got sounds great for this tune..... not a song I'd heard before, but you can't go wrong for this theme with a lyric by William Blake.....

Caleb Meyer by Gillian Welch and David Rawlings. Sorry peewee but this song is not suitable for children. I'll probably post another later in the week so this may end up being just a bonus.
http://youtu.be/MDgMcQTvI_o

Brilliant choice, Myrna - the opening cut off of the finest record ever made! (seriously - it's my favorite album....) You do a great job with it.... you really capture the dark weirdness of the story and your vocals are gorgeous, as always.... loved it!

Nice one, Blind Alan Thornton.... good and creepy and soulful.....

This is by the late Vic Chesnutt.

great choice of tunes, Dave - Vic Chesnutt was from just down the road in Athens and his records had a huge impact on me as a teenager - one of the writers who turned me on to the idea that you could mix genres freely and make real art out of folk music. This must be one of his later tunes, not one I'm familiar with, but it's a great song. Love your take on it and the video is great.... good stuff...

Thank you
Jazzbanjorex

Dig it, Rex! Nice picking, great vocals, and a wonderful tune... was wondering who was going to bust this one out first..... cool instrument, as well....

Did someone say MISFITS?

Just watched this one again, Dave - and it made my day all over again. This is just right - I'm picturing Glenn Danzig in a small honky tonk at three in the morning..... doesn't get much better.....

total insanity - in the best way possible. This is truly splendid - you've outdone yourself, Joko.....

Very hip version, Mike - great vibe and excellent performance.....

Great choice, caroljean - I've always loved that line 'I did not expect a specter.' I think this is your best post yet - your performances get stronger each week - keep it up!

Excellent, K - thought about doing this one myself.... great vocals, as always - especially dig the 'yips!'.... fine job on keeping that strum going, as well....

what a tune, wee.... from one of the few Dylan albums I've not heard. Not sure I need to hear the original now - a rousing rendition. Excellent as always.....

GREAT tune, Berni..... love the sound of the steel strings - perfect for this tune and your inflection....

this is pretty silly, but I'm not strumsilly for nothin.
http://youtu.be/t7OtbKFg0Qw

Holy crap, Andy, that's awesome! The reverb, the two voices, the strum, the video effects.... great job! It's amazing what folks are starting to pull off in one live take.....

If you've got a silver bullet
Keep that sucker in your belt
'cause if pull it out of there
it's the last thing you'll have felt

So don't come to hunt my family
In this pet store of the night
When your arm is gone you'll feel sore
but not terribly bright.

The night is made for howling
and for prowling and for blood
and the last thing hunters hear
is when their head falls with a thud.
Great fun Krabbers.
