46th Season of the Ukulele: 011137

And we're off!
While Saskia is reading up on Australia in the absolutely brilliant 'In a Sunburned Country' by Bill Bryson, I'm playing It's Only a Paper Moon.
I've doubled the minimum amount of necessary chords (15). And halved maximum amount of time (1.5 minutes).

Woohoo! I'm the first one!

Lovely relaxed style.

I should've realised you'd know how to bend the rules. Very effective with nice, simple arrangement.

My offering this week is ironic in a couple ways. First, it was originally recorded by one of the great duets in music history. Second, I committed this week to a new job overseas. Come April 15th, I'll be living and working in Phuket, Thailand. Never been there before. I'm quite excited. What's the opposite of "homeward"? "Awayward"? That's where I'm bound.

Excellent choice and well sung. Paul Simon is thought to have written it on Widnes Railway Station in England and it's a pretty bleak place.

All the best Thailand. It'll be a great experience whatever. My late brother-in-law worked in Thailand many years ago, up in the north somewhere. He took his family and they enjoyed their time there. They tried to learn to speak Thai but found it a struggle.

Another One Take Wonder (This time with no false starts. Turned the camera on, recorded, camera off.)
Nobody Knows You (When You're Down And Out.)
It has more than 7 chords. The progression is in the YouTube description.

And Happy New Year to One and All... well except you- and you know who you are! (g)

(That was a joke... Honestly!)

Nicely done Kurt. I see you don't like multiple takes.

13 chords, 2:37, performed solo, au naturel, only one take, muffed the bridge, but it was too chilly to do more...

Fair Warning: If you might be offended by "au naturel" ukeing by an old out-of-shape guy, don't click this link. (Nothing explicit, just me having a laugh, couldn't resist when Pa mentioned it is his video, Rated PG.)

Nice one, Dave. You're not trying to outdo the Calendar Girls by any chance?

Dedicated to my family... over 7000 miles away from me.
Dedicated to my "ukulele brothers & sisters"... scattered all over the world.

16 chords, I think. 1 take. Very raw & low-tech :)

Lovely singing, as usual and not sounding raw at all.

Forgive me if someone has done this song already, or used the same props, or used the same back drop. Anyway, I was feeling a bit silly getting ready for new years eve hat party, so....

Nice one. Loved the hat and the monkey. I'll have to get my monitor lizard out when I do mine.

Very, very nice. Your singing - as usual - is tremendous, and your playing gets better and better each video I watch. Very polished!

Thank you for that, and Happy New Year!

Just one request, if you're going to keep doing videos this way:

Could you please get a lectern, instead of a music stand?

Thank you.

This is an original song. The last few years, I've occasionally gotten to play 15 or 20 minutes in someone's show, and I found it was useful to have a couple of two-minute long songs so I can squeeze an extra song into a time slot.

Lyrics:

This has been the longest day in the history of time
This has been the longest day, I need new walls to climb
Look at the clock, how's it moving so slow?
My palms are itching and I'm raring to go

This has been the longest day that the universe has known
I want out in the strongest way, and I dread the ringing phone
It's too much for my heart to take
I need a change now, I need a break
Sitting here in my cubbyhole
Everything's glittering but none of it's gold

I'm feeling like I'm gonna lose my mind
This has been the longest day in the history of time
I grab my jacket and I'm out the door
Pushing the gas pedal down to the floor
They say "Ease up, man, just let yourself coast"
But he who hesitates is toast

8 chords. short and sweet for Briz. happy new year y'all, thanks for a great year of music. :)

Auld Lang Syne

This has the minimum 7 chords, and I did it really quick (so I'm not happy with it being a little pitchy in a couple places). I hope you like it, though. :) Happy New Year!

Hi All. Happy 2013!

Here's an entry - I recorded a song and went to post it, but it had already been done... and well... so here's an unrehearsed replacement tune: Rubber Ducky from Sesame Street:

great entries, thanks Pabrizzer

Duke Ellington and Bob Russell, 1943. The instrumental version from 1940 was entitled "Concerto for Cootie", referring to Cootie Williams, Ellington's lead trumpeter.

My voice is still recovering from the flu, sorry.

Here are the chords I used, in order of appearance:

Cm7/F F6 Fadd9 Ab9 BbM7 Fm7 Bb9 EbM7 Ebm7 C7 Eb7b5 Bb
Dbsus4 Db7 GbM7 Ebm7 Bb6 F9 F7

BWAAA - HAAAA. I think you're just a little too friendly with that sock monkey, you sure you haven't started celebrating early? :)

Great instrumental! Hey, is Saskia going to grace us with a song acapella - oh, wait, I guess it's a little hard to meet the 7-chord requirement singing acapella!

I wore out several copies of the S&G greatest hits cassette back in the day - it was always playing in my car - my friends thought I didn't have any other tapes. :)

Beautiful voice, as always. I hope you get to see your family soon.

Hmmm, thought I'd copied the Wee Ginga's post too - oh well, it was great fun and good to hear your unaltered voice...but you just had to crowd the rules, huh! :)

Season 101110 of the ukulele

Here is my entry. The song is based on a traditional lullaby from the Bahamas and was popular during the folk music movement of the 60s.

I thought it would come in under 3mins but it just crept over and I hadn't time to do it again, so it'll have to stand. It does have the requisite 7 chords. The chord shapes you see on the video are C, Am, Dm, G7, Gm, F and Fm. The uke is in D-tuning so they are sounding a tone higher.

My voice is bit ropey as I am recovering from a rather nasty cough.
