Hi...

Although I am new to the forum, I've been a follower of the underground for months. I've only been playing a tenor uke few a months and enjoy it very much. My wife picked me up a used second hand solid body electric tenor uke a few weeks ago from somewhere.
I know she did it cause it looked cool. I cleaned it up and started researching what strings to use. Nowhere can I find info on this. So, I just started trying out different combination for a gCEA sound.

I've been successful with the exception of the "C" string. Although I can tune it to get the "C" note.....it vibrates for what seems like FOREVER; to the point it drowns out the other strings while being strummed or picked...plugged or unplugged to amp.

Anyone have any advice? It is really fun to play but the "C" string issue is bringing me down. My strings are steel electric strings g-.28 C-.41 E- .41 A-.28.

Thanks for any input.

I have no experience with steel strings. I have nylon aquilia on my solid eleuke concert.I have to adjust tone and bass on my amp to get the sound I want on the c to balance with the other strings.What make is your uke?

here are the string recommendations I got for my Risa Semi Hollowbody tenor uke

here are Risa's and D'Addario's recommndations:

heavy gauge (about 20 lbs tension):
high g - .014"
low-G = 0.030" wound
C = 0.023" wound or 0.020" plain
E = 0.016" plain
A = 0.012" plain

light gauge (about 15 lbs tension):
high g = .012
low-G = 0.026" wound
C = 0.017" plain
E = 0.014" plain
A = 0.010" plain

A 0.018" for C is is okay. You can buy a standard electric guitar string
set 0.010" and take the first four strings of this set.

With kind regards
RISA Musical Instruments

And D'Addario's Recommendations:

Unit Weight Scale Length Frequency Gauge Tension
(Lb/in) (in) (Hz) (in) (Lb)

;) I'm still a beginner...it just fell into my hands, but I do have fun with it. I did buy a Roland Micro-Cube as an amp. It's turning out to be a versatile little instrument. If I can just get this "C" string vibration thing worked out.. Maybe when I get better I can move up. Thanks

Hey Phil.

There's a pic a couple of post above. Thanks for the advice. As compared to your chart, I may have use too thick of a gauge of strings. I'll go by the music store tomorrow and let you know what happens.

Thanks again.

that helped out alot. vibration is gone from "C"chord. However, when I put the .17 in place there is a slight ringing sound. I ink it has something to do with the slot in the nut. when I place my finger nail down next to the string and pick the "C" the ringing goes away. My try slightly larger gauge. But still much much better.....thanks

Ams out in New York sells replacement string sets for their Vorson electric tenor ukes, made by D'addario

I'm surprised that no one ever posted measurements of the strings that come with the Vorson ukulele. I measured mine with calipers. It's not as straightforward as I would have thought, as the diameter is not the same all along the string. Here's what I found:
G C E A
bridge11 17 16 10
neck 14 22 20 11
nut 13 20 18 15

Confusing, eh? I finally decided to go with two 10's and two 16's.

Contact Jim Hellar at Monkey Wrench music, he builds solid body steel string ukes he can tell you what to use.

Old thread I know but just thought I'd post that I've just put a set of low-G tenor Risa strings on my Vorson and they're lovely! Love the weight and tension of them, nice rich sound, and stay in tune amazingly!

I've got super slinky on my Risa lp tenor. Plays great. Use smallest 4 strings. Tuned low gcea. Chunk out 2.

I order my electric uke steel string sets from South Coast strings. I swear by their uke strings.
