$300. Suggestions?

I'm going to give a slightly different view -

For $300 I'd get something from http://www.magicfluke.com/. If you get a basic model fluke or flea (or firefly) with case you'll come out nicely under $300 for a uke that plays amazing and sounds great. Because of the way its manufactured, the flea/fluke has amazing set-up and intonation.

In general, the people I've asked an opinion of prefer the Flea over my Pono MT. The sound from the flea is a little more classic uke with a nice punch to it, while the Pono has a very clean, crisp (perhaps overly bright) sound. My only complaint with my flea is that I can't see the frets in low light (I've got both a wood and plastic fretboard from Magic Fluke and I prefer the plastic).

Darn it! Now why didn't I think of that?

I only STARTED the Magic Fluke Company appreciation thread just yesterday - lots of love for these instruments over there:

@rem50 - maybe you should check it out before you give away all your money for something else? :)

@PTOEguy - there's a HUGE thread about this subject of the polycarbonate fretboard visibility issue going on right now here as well:

There's also a VERY lengthy and detailed thread about ALL kinds of strings going on over here:

Some people love them some people hate them. I dont want to be a basher, but I really did not like the feel of it. They look cool, and sound nice but they just felt off for me. If you go this route try to get to try one out first cause they feel ALOT different than regular ukulele's.

Don't mean to cause a ruckus here just trying to be a devil's advocate is all.

@ kwall: No worries mate! The Fluke/Flea neck is a different profile than almost all other ukes and the nut is also a bit wider, some folks can not get used to it. Also the polycarbonate fretboard option tends to trip people up visually, so it aint for everybody.

We all got different likes/dislikes, and kwall, my friend, it's all good...:)

This is a great thread. I am looking for a Travel tenor and never considered a Fluke before. But I am now. With some fluorocarbon strings.

Thanks.

I have been looking at the Mainland Cedar/Rosewood Tenor. It looks great and sounds sweet.

Hmm, what to do with $ 300?

Import half a dozen cheap Asian ukes and sell them for $ 600 each, then order a couple of Moore Bettah customs?

I have a Pono MTDX tenor up for grabs. It is only months old. Great instrument all around. Have a Pepe on order and would love to sell this one. I also have a Kamaka HF-3 tenor. Don't know what to do with three.
