Yeah, the end grain looks okay at the top of the headstock, so I guess it's alright. Just never saw that before on an instrument. Knots, but not a strong, straight grain line. I have seen grain lines like that split on pine boards.
Thuddy G: Pulled a quarter out of my pocket, and taped it to the soundboard. The G note on the 3rd fret of the E string is fine now, and the open G string has been toned down. Except for the protruding frets, the rest of the instrument is fine. I'll probably just deal with it, and stop playing luck of the draw with the mail order places. Thuddy notes are to be expected, it's just better for me when they're not on an open string.
