There is a Hawaiian-style strum I have been trying to replicate for YEARS. It involves opening up the fingers of the strumming hand to get that cha-lang-a-lang-a-lang. I see many people do it effortlessly yet it eludes me completely. Weird, because I can pick arpeggios all day long, so it's not a dexterity issue.

This is geared toward guitar, but is equally useful for the uke. Figure 2 lays out what I was referring to. There are a couple of keys missing, but you can work them out.

Great question and topic!

Improvisation. Always has been my Achilles' heel. Doesn't matter what instrument. I've always been scared of it and have never been willing to jump in and commit myself to the work to build the foundation.
