What a great show. I think those boys are really going to succeed if they keep at it. It is nice to see young people embracing the Hawaiian culture and playing old style music, and playing it very well.

I Like Beer
Tom T Hall

[G] In some of my songs I have [C] casually mentioned
The [G] fact that I like to drink beer
[G] This little song is [C] more to the point
So [G] roll out the barrel and [D7] lend me your ears

(Chorus)
[D7] I like [G] beer. It [C] makes me a jolly good [G] fellow
I like [D] beer. It helps me unwind and sometimes it makes me feel [G] mellow
(Makes him feel mellow)
Whiskey's too rough, cham[C]pagne costs too much, [G] vodka puts my mouth in [D] gear
This [G] little refrain should [C] help me explain as a [G] matter of [D] fact I like [G] beer
(He likes beer)

[G] My wife often frowns when we're [C] out on the town
And I'm [G] wearing a suit and a [D] tie
She's [G] sipping vermouth and she [C] thinks I'm uncouth
When I [G] yell as the waiter goes [D7] by

(Chorus)

[G] Last night in a dream I [C] passed from the scene
And I [G] went to a place so sub[D]lime
The [G] water was clear and it [C] tasted like beer...
Then they [G] turned it [D] all into [G] wine (awww) [D7]

(Chorus)

(Yes, he likes beer)

So hard for teens.

There is a girl in my class who comes in every day to commiserate about diabetes. Today she was telling me that there's a "bionic" pancreas in the human testing phase.
That is so cool. The leaps and bounds in medicine, just since we were kids, is amazing.

Thanks for the update. PoHoMoJo shall continue.

Thanx.

And for those of you not on Facebook, his blood sugar was 700 when we got to the hospital, was down to 268, last night, and 128 this morning. They just removed all the IVs, and he is currently eating bacon. After he eats, they will begin to teach him,and us, how to check his blood sugar, and insulin dosages. And, I get to take him for walks today.

I'm glad they're getting him sorted out, YAM. How old is Caleb? I'm hoping he's at an age where he can appreciate the gravity of the situation, and will be diligent in testing his blood and administering his insulin. I've never fully understood the chemistry of diabetes, and I hope I never have to....

Very good to hear that things are getting under control.

I'm headed off to the weekly jam in a couple of minutes. I'm going to try to introduce a "new" song this week, and see how it goes. The group, and one guy in particular, are pretty firmly stuck on cowboy and trail songs. They're alright, but they're getting stale, week after week. This song involves a train, so maybe they'll think it's okay. ;) It's at the top of my vocal range in places, but we'll see how it goes....

City Of New Orleans
Arlo Guthrie

[F] Riding on the [C] City of New [F] Orleans
[Dm] Illinois Central [Bb] Monday morning [F] rail
[F] Fifteen cars and [C] fifteen restless [F] riders
Three con[Dm]ductors and [C] twenty five sacks of [F] mail
All a[Dm]long the south bound odyssey the [Am] train pulls out of Kenkakee
[C] Rolls along past houses farms and [G] fields
[Dm] Passing trains that have no name [Am] freight yards full of old black men
And the [C] graveyards of [C7] rusted automo[F]biles

Chorus:
[Bb] Good morning A[C]merica how [F] are you
Say [Dm] don't you know me [Bb] I'm your native [F] son
[C] I'm the [F] train they call the [C] City of New [Dm] Orleans [G7]
I'll be [Cm] gone five [Gm] hundred [C] miles when the day is [F] done

[F] Dealing card games with the [C] old men in the [F] club car
[Dm] Penny a point ain't [Bb] no-one keeping [F] score
[F] Pass the paper [C] bag that holds the [F] bottle
[Dm] Feel the wheels [C] rumbling 'neath the [F] floor
And the [Dm] sons of Pullman porters and the [Am] sons of engineers
Ride their [C] father's magic carpets made of [G] steel
[Dm] Mothers with their babes asleep [Am] rocking to the gentle beat
And the [C] rhythm of the [C7] rails is all they [F] feel

[F] Night time on the [C] City of New [F] Orleans
[Dm] Changing cars in [Bb] Memphis Tenne[F]ssee
[F] Half way home [C] we'll be there by [F] morning
Through the [Dm] Mississippi darkness [C] rolling down to the [F] sea
But [Dm] all the towns and people seem to [Am] fade into a bad dream
And the [C] steel rail still ain't heard the [G] news
The con[Dm]ductor sings his songs again
The [Am] passengers will please refrain
This [C] train got the disa[C7]ppearing railroad [F] blues

[Bb] Good night A[C]merica how [F] are you
Say [Dm] don't you know me [Bb] I'm your native [F] son
[C] I'm the [F] train they call the [C] City of New [Dm] Orleans [G7]
I'll be [Cm] gone five [Gm] hundred [C] miles when the day is [F] done
I'll be [Cm] gone five [Gm] hundred [C] miles when the day is [F] done

Kenkakee, in the song, is spelled Kankakee.

If it's the Illinois Central Railroad, I assume Arlo is taking about it's Kankakee, IL? It's south of Chicago.

This is the exact version, of the song, that I have, Don.
But to my ear the last line of the chorus feels weird.

[C] I'm the [F] train they call the [C] City of New [Dm] Orleans [G7]
I'll be [Cm] gone five [Gm] hundred [C] miles when the day is [F] done

The minor chords seem not optimum. Maybe minor 7s? It's probably me I suppose.
Maybe I'm just more goofy than usual?

The key of C works better for my voice I think.

[F] Good morning A[G]merica how [C] are you
Say [Am] don't you know me [F] I'm your native [C] son
[G] I'm the [C] train they call the [G] City of New [Am] Orleans
[D7] I'll be [Gm7] gone five [Dm] hundred [G] miles when the day is [C] done
