Hi all,

I currently play an $86 Lanakai I picked up from guitar center. Actually it is my second as I had to bring the first back for string buzz issues. I know the same is going to happen on round two and I am committed enough to the uke now that I am comfortable spending some more money on a nice setup.

I am looking for recommendations on a concert size uke in the +/-$300 range. I could probably go up in price if I find something I fall in love with. Ideal attributes are as follows:
- poppy tone like mahogany or koa
- electric pickup (optional)
- low action and great fretboard

I had my eye on this bad boy and was curious if anyone had any insight into the mitchell brand....

Honestly, I am really just looking for a solid instrument that sounds beautiful, looks amazing, and will LAST A LONG TIME.

Any recommendations/advice would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks in advance,

Check out the Mainland Concert Classic.

Pono makes both mahogany and an acacia all solid wood instruments in that price range. Islander MSC-4 is an all solid wood mahogany that I have played and really like the sound and feel of, just under $300.00. Ohana and Mainland have all solid mahogany for right around $250 to $300. If you want to spend $400.00 get the Koaloha Opio and never look back, it is that good. Lots of really good concerts in your price range. If you are patient just keep checking the market place forum right here. You can get something great for about 60-70% of new cost.

The Kala KA-ASOV-C is near that price, no pickup, but a wonderful sounding/playing instrument in all solid woods.

That Honu is sweet and I love my Pono mahogany concert. That Mitchell is basically an Oscar Schmidt. On the low end of your price scale, this all solid mahogany Kala with tortoise binding is tough to beat. Price just lowered to $150:

I also happen to love this Kala: http://www.ebay.com/itm/171327875641?_trksid=p2055119.m1438.l2649&ssPageName=STRK:MEBIDX:IT

Paradise-Ukuleles has a nice Pono mahogany concert on ebay. He is a former uke tech at Ko'olau. Will go for a real bargain. It's at the top of this list:

The Kala Concert in my sig. Incredible instrument.

There are 2 Koalana concerts that are posted in the marketplace. They are Koaloha's import line. I have a Koaloha concert, and if these are even close, one of those would be my pick.

Mainland red cedar. Mele mahogany would be my first two choices. Those Mitchell's are pretty but cheap and their sound is lacking. You really have a lot of options in your budget. Contact mike at ukerepublic.com and explain what you want.
