I'm looking to get a new folding music stand to take to classes with me. The one I have right now is very flimsy and has broken twice on me. My main limitation is that I want to carry all my stuff in my backpack to class -- so I need a folding stand where each piece will fold to 18" or less.

Anyone out there have any recommendations for a fairly sturdy, yet packable, music stand?

I'd like to find something like this Hercules one but I'm afraid it won't condense down small enough to fit in the backpack I'm using.

The Anderson music stand is one of the most beautiful and best designed portable stands on the market. It packs into it's own small tube. It is however, expensive. I believe it is on sale right now, although you could buy a nice uke for the price of the stand.

You got that right! It is beautiful, though.

My violin-playing GF has the Peak folding stand and loves it:
Alas, it's too big: "...quickly collapses to fit into the included 24 x 6 x 6 carry bag." :(

I have a Hamilton, which seems to be quite sturdy compared to other folding stands I've seen.

I'm not sure what model it is (doesn't say on it) and it's quite old, so may no longer be exactly what they offer. Top looks like the KB1 and it has two segments, but the desk angle is adjustable like what they show for the KB70 desktop stand with the "kickstand" in back. It came with a pouch and folds down to be 18" in the pouch. Several of their models do say they fold down to 17".

A pouch is a good idea to keep the metal from rubbing against anything in your backpack, but I'm sure it'd be a breeze to make one, maybe out of an old jeans pantleg or such, just sew up one end and add a drawstring on the other. :)

You're right. :( I found this review that says it folds down to 26".

Remembered a folding stand I won in a raffle that I've never used. Dug it out of the closet (it's a Belmonte 1050N), but I measured and it's 21".

Have you checked with Old Town Music in Pasadena to see what they've got?

Hmm, I've never been there. Where is it at?

I have an aluminum Cordoba Precision music stand that I really like. Weighs 1.5 lbs and folds up to 20" long in a nice bag. Got it at Guitar Center.

Ooh, that one looks pretty good. I will head over to Guitar Center to look. The good news is that my spouse says I can maybe get a wood one (though I think the Anderson is out of the question) for at home, so I might get this Cordoba to take to class and have a cool wood one for at home.

Thanks for the tips everyone!

They're on Colorado just east of Fair Oaks. A nice old-fashioned family style music store. They used to have a long-haired black & silver "store cat" named Igor and there were signs on the door to please not let Igor out. Haven't been there in a few years, though.

Milton magic stand is awesome if you like having stand that is also suitable for performances...

I have a music stand that folds up pretty well, and it is light too. It is made by "On Stage Stands" and although the pictures online make it look pretty flimsy, it is sturdier than some my friends have. Plus, it was really inexpensive. Here is a link where is is being sold for $10.99

I paid a bit more but bought it locally. It works great for me and comes with a little black case.
