Is there a min max on nut thickness? I ask because the slot on the Uke im building seems to be 1/8" wide not 3/16". Could I make a 1/8" thick nut work or should I go on and file the slot on the veneer side to get another 1/16 out of it?

I cut my nuts from 2 mm bone saddle blanks.

I'd be happy with a 1/8" nut, but if I felt it needed to be thicker, I wouldn't bother opening up the gap - I'd cut a 1/8" tongue into the base of the nut so it fits into the available gap.

1/8" is fine for a nut thickness. Have fun sanding down the nut blank to fit!!

1/8 is fine- i wouldn't go thinner though.

Mine are 4-5mm'ish-

All are a bit different as i like to put the 14th fret over the body join and if im having a bad neck setting day the nut will be a bit thinner.

Just don't breathe any nut dust. Or any dust for that matter :)

Now he just needs some catchy band member names like.... Thick Nut, Slim Nut, Broke Nut Mountain, Nut Viscious. Anything Nut realated except Busta would do.

You can make it 1/8. Typically many builders use 3/16", but as long as it is slotted, ramped, and seated correctly it should not matter.

Thanks Mark, the Uke has a 1/8" nut and it turned out just fine. It was only my 3rd time making one and I was looking for some assurance from some of the pros before I started trying to widen the slot. I actually like the slim look of the 1/8" nut so win win.

Oh and fix your Facebook page I would love to see more of your work, checked out your website and your doing some nice stuff up there.
