Can you guess?

Yep, we want to sing Beach Boys songs OR songs about our Pets or other cool animals. How about a max of 3 songs total on either of the two subjects so I can take care the season and still keep my day job? Thanks for that. Additional entries can go to the Island to keep singing.

As always, rules aren't really as important as the music to me so if you tiptoe over the line an post four songs here I'm not going to even blink. If you want to do something a little different, just go ahead and Rave On, as Buddy said.

Songs by other folks associated with the Beach Boys are fine. Van Dyke Parks anyone?

Hmmm.... I've got to confer with Eisley on this one. In the meantime, this is an old one. I always thought that of all the songs I tried on tiple, this was the one that sounded the best.

Here's another old one from the other option: A song about a pet—this one, from the perspective of a pet.

I hope I find time to record one this week! I'm pretty sure I can find something that would be fun for me . . .

As we are still in the "things I have done that fit the theme" phase, here is my song about a poor young cat about to be taken to the vet's for "the Op".

I used to introduce this to audiences as "the song they left out of The Aristocats". Imagine Thomas O'Malley and the gang accompanying me on this one.

I've got a busy week ahead, but Ill try and come up with a new song for the theme later this week.

This is an old russian folk song. It tells of a sailor who took part in the mutiny that occurred in 1905
when the crew of the Russian battleship Potemkin rebelled against their officers of the Tsarist regime.
He was deported and had to work on a sugar plantation in Cuba, from where he escaped to Nassau, and
this song tells of his longing to return from the Imperilaist west to the good and abundant life in Russia.

I have a Aussie which captured my heart at a shelter. I was working near Knoxville TN and my family arrived a day after I met Kiki. I loaded them up in the car their first night there and said I have something to show them. One look and they were slain also with her. I contacted the Aussie Rescue and said I would like to adopt her and was told two people were in front of me, they brought another furry friend over but it just didn't feel right. I said thank you but we wished to have the one who captured our heart. The kids were sad and so was my wife and I, we thought it just wasn't meant to be.
To make a long story longer....that night we got a call and the owner of the rescue said he decided that Kiki was meant for our family. She fit in like a hand in a glove and everyone loves her, even the cats which are her "babies". She herds her flock daily.
I feel you lose and hate to see the day come when Kiki will move on.
Damn....where is my tissue, my eyes are leaking.

Of COURSE!
Remember, on any of my seasons, everyone is the co-host and gets to make decisions.

Funny(ish) unrelated story from the 60's. A friend of mine told the members of a band called "Chakra" that she'd named her fluffy little white dog after them. They replied that that was interesting since they'd named their band after a dog by that name.

What a wonderful start, friends. Thanks!
A good number of retreads but they're all keepers and some I hadn't seen before so I'm really glad you posted them. Myrna, your song for Gypsy is still one of my favorite songs I've ever heard here. Eric! You're jamming wonderfully as always and made a splendid post for this week. Wee Tigers!!! Hi friends! You made a wonderful video, too!!

I've posted to each of the You Tubes so far and I've decided not to copy and past those comments here since this space has, I think, benefitted from having most of the comments placed where most of us go to watch them anyway. I may mention some more posts as above in the spirit of the old Honorable Mention idea but I always love all of the work in the Seasons.

Okay, I'll be back to hear some more great songs later today.

Party on dudes and wahinis!

This is my interpretation of Raised by Wolves from the new U2 Album.
I guess Wolves are other wonderful Animals in my view, and I wanted to do a song from the new album ;).
The lyrics are pretty heavy and not actually about Wolves.
I think they are about loosing your faith, because of what is done in the name of faith.

A quickie first entry. Great song for a singalong, so join in. Lyrics below the video link.

Traditional song recorded by the Beach Boys.

http://youtu.be/iYo2H8y9AXg

We [D] come on the sloop [Dsus4] John [D] B,
my [D] Grandfather [Dsus4] and [D] me.
Around [D] Nassau town we did [A7] roam.
Drinkin' all [D] night.
Got into a[G] fight.
Well, I [D] feel so break up, [A7] I want to go [D] home.

Chorus:
Hoist up the John B's sails.
See how the main sails set.
Call for the captain ashore, let me go home.
Let me go home.
I want to go home.
Well, I feel so break up, I want to go home.

First mate, he got drunk.
Broke up the people's trunk.
Constable had to come and take him away.
Sheriff John Stone,
why don't you leave me alone?
Well, I feel so break up, I want to go home.

Well, the poor cook he caught the fits.
Throw away all of my grits.
Then he took and he ate up all of my corn.
Let me go home.
I want to go home.
This is the worst trip since I've been born.

The Dsus4 is really just a hammer on on the E string, third fret.

Old Russian Folksong. Fiddlesticks! You've been listening to too many myths put about by a bunch of rogue meerkats (http://www.comparethemeerkat.com/)

It's really about a little known attempt by William Pitt (The Younger) to retake America. Unfortunately his fleet got stuck in Nassau bay waiting for the tide so they could cross the Gulf Stream and was sunk by a six-gun toting sheriff called Johnstone after the officer on watch had drunk too much rum earlier that day.

Things have slowed a bit over at Season 134 so I snuck this one in for Alan. I got a new Banjo Ukulele as a gift from my father and I have yet to record it. Here's a Neil Young classic from the "Harvest Moon" album - "Old King.

This song is dedicated to our two wonderful labs (Nero and Finn) who we lost about a year apart, both to different cancers. They were sweet, loving, gentle and playful dogs and we miss them every day despite our new bundles of joy (Ellie the lab and Marvin the Basset Hound)

Birdseye is skipping a Season, and Pabrizzer posted his first video on Monday. There must be a frost on the trees of hell today.

Love this theme. Re-watching Myrna's dog tribute video made me cry (again), and has inspired me to write a song about my sweet departed leash-walking kitty Twinny, who walked off to greener pastures at age 18 last summer.

I stayed up past my bedtime, but got the song half written last night. (Which makes me cry even more. Tears of joy, mostly. There was no cat quite like my Twinny.)

I have video of her walking on her leash ... and so far zero video editing experience. About time I remedied that, probably. Would love any help anyone might offer with getting a video made like Myrna's, with cat footage and me singing her song.

Also, if anyone has a suggestion for a Beach Boys song for me, I'd love that. I have lots of pet song ideas. Loving everybody else's Beach Boys so far, and have not yet done one of theirs.

Hug your furry friends for me today!

Yeah, you probably want to avoid the Concrete Blonde song. Kim Wilde had one called "Wendy Said".

Yeah, I recently learned of the Concrete Blonde song. Not a big fan ... for both of the obvious reasons. Might have to tweak it "my way" like I just did for "Positively 4th Street" (http://youtu.be/IkUGxonsj1w). Anyway, unless CB has Beach Boy connections or there is a pet mentioned in that song, we are getting OT. The Kim Wilde is new to me ... it's actually called "Wendy Sadd" - the character's full name. It's just as depressing as the other one!

I'm gonna go do the Beach Boys' "Wendy" now. It's sad too (cuz she left "me" alone), but nowhere near as bad as those two!

I just did a search and there's a dozen tunes in my iTunes library with Jim or Jimmy in the title. The only one I might ever have interest in playing is "Jules and Jim" by Nada Surf.

<much snipping>

We were having fun but I was aware that "Sloop John B" was a Bahamian folk song collected sometime in the early part of the 20th century. I have some more details here from Mudcat, the folk music forum.

"The John B. Sails" or "The Sloop John B." has been collected in slightly different versions at least 3 times in the West Indies. The earliest copy is one that I don't know has been printed. It's in Vol. 8, #1887, in the Gordon manuscripts in the Library of Congress Folklore Archive. It was 'Sung by Negros of Bahama Island 1916-1919'. The next is "The John B. Sails" in Sandburg's 'The American Songbag', p. 22, 1927, and the last is of the same title, collected by Alan Lomax , at Nassau, 1935, and given in 'The Folk Songs of North America', p. 530, 1960.

Also Lonnie Donnegan recorded it 1960 in the UK which is where I first heard it and I knew it before the Beach Boys recorded it though I do like the Beach Boys version.

The Weavers, The Kingston Trio and Lonnie Donnegan most likely based their versions on Sandburg though it's possible the Weavers will have used the Lomax version.

Really?! You have a Kim Wilde CD and it says "Wendy Said"? I listened to the song - it's clearly a last name, not a verb. And the internet says so. :)

I just did a search and there's a dozen tunes in my iTunes library with Jim or Jimmy in the title. The only one I might ever have interest in playing is "Jules and Jim" by Nada Surf.

What about "Sweet Baby James"? FiL plays a fun song called "Don't Sit on my Jimmy Shands". Also, check out a band called Jim's Big Ego.

We are so OT now ... we better start talking about Beach Boys or pets. I wish they all could be California Jims. There.

Apologies if I am the only one here the Beach Boys wrote a song for. Songs with your name in the title will have to be a future Season theme, I think. That would be fun!

Yeah I was .. and playing along too until I got to that G chord. G on a tenor / soprano equals D on a standard tuned bari.:)

Enjoyed that a LOT Linda!

One of my favorite movies is "Almost Famous". The first time I saw it, I was blown away by a song I'd never heard before that plays over the closing credits. It was "Feel Flows" by the Beach Boys. Every time I watch the movie, I have the song stuck in my head for days afterward. So when Alan announced the theme Saturday, I watched the DVD that night.

First of all, I love me some Beach Boys, and of course some Uke, so great week so far!

Not all of the Beach Boys oeuvre works well for toad-voiced me and a single uke, but here's one that sort of works like a regular tune.
It goes out to all of you EXCEPT Eugene, who I think we already saw in the altogether..
"I'd Love Just Once to See You" (in the nude)

There are so many great tunes to work with this week, I just wish the chord charts available online were a little more accurate..

Also Lonnie Donnegan recorded it 1960 in the UK which is where I first heard it
and I knew it before the Beach Boys recorded it though I do like the Beach Boys version.
The Weavers, The Kingston Trio and Lonnie Donnegan most likely based their versions on Sandburg
though it's possible the Weavers will have used the Lomax version.

I heard it in the 60's from Lonnie, during the skiffle boom... I always thought of it as a skiffle song.
Here is a version of Van the Man doing it with Lonnie on Jools.
WHen are we gonna have a Lonniie Donnegan skiffle season... now that would be really interesting.

Pa taught me this one this afternoon as well as helping me with my homework.
Well I can play the chords pretty well.
And when he plays them I can sing the song pretty well.
But when I play and sing it doesn't go as well with just half an hours work on it.
So pa sang along with me and so did the magpie - you can hear it at the end of the vid when pa is talking.
Wouldn't It Be Nice (I think pa fiddled with the lyrics).

Just wanted to post this older video of a song I wrote for a beloved kitty, Purrtader, that I lost due to bladder stones. He would always come running in to me when I sat down to play the uke, he loved it. I lost his brother, Kiwi, the same way just a year later and though I started composing a song for him I never finished it.

LOVE Les Barker! He was the first one I thought of for the pets theme. Many, many of his poems are about animals, especially dogs. In fact, he has dozens of books of collections of his poems ... and I believe every one has a title that's a dog pun. (Maybe because his last name is kind of a dog pun itself?)

He comes here from time to time ... the Folk Project features him at their Minstrel concert series ... I'm pretty sure he's the only non-musician who ever performs there.

A local songwriter friend from that community, Ken Galipeau (http://www.storynsong.com/about.html), has set many of Les's poems to music. He has an entire album called "Ken Sings Les" (https://play.spotify.com/album/2ysdXUILpzj8QxyewlV0Ti).

I myself was thinking to do "Go Stay Fetch" (https://play.spotify.com/track/1Z1Dw4kzUWQmqHHoeCQJFg) ... a pretty hilarious song about a guy who names his dogs after dog commands, and then wonders why they're so confused and won't do what he asks.

There's another Les Barker poem called "Dachshunds with Erections Shouldn't Climb Stairs", but I don't think that one's been set to music yet. But Ken's album has "Dachshundia" (https://play.spotify.com/track/5tBo9By7HvbJpHzHxcyamV) (which references it) and "Arnold" (https://play.spotify.com/track/01Qv1qul6sFadlfEnVrvf4) - about an armadillo who falls in love with a concertina. (Maria? :))

And tons more fun stuff just waiting to be set to music!

I am listening to Ken's album now ... thanks for posting this, Rob!

Well, I had to do one for my pal Alan's week.

I never liked the Beach Boys until the mid-90s, when I picked up a copy of Pet Sounds after it had been voted the greatest rock album of all time. And it blew me away. I have since come to think of Brian Wilson as one of the ultimate pop musical geniuses of all time - at his peak, on a par with anyone.

This is one of my favorite songs of his. No one can top his production skills, but I tried to make this effort worthy of the work. Hope you like it.

Well, I was just going from my ear listening carefully after years of thinking the same thing.
Here's the lyric from the unofficial Donovan site. If I'm incorrect, these folks are, too:
There Is A Mountain
Music and lyrics by Donovan P. Leitch

That's nice!

The lock upon my garden gate's
A snail, that's what it is
The lock upon my garden gate's
A snail, that's what it is
First there is a mountain
Then there is no mountain, then there is
First there is a mountain
Then there is no mountain, then there is

Oh, yeah! That's nice!

The caterpillar sheds his skin
To find a butterfly within
Caterpillar sheds his skin
To find a butterfly within
First there is a mountain
Then there is no mountain, then there is
First there is a mountain
Then there is no mountain

Oh, Anita, oh, Anita
Oh, Anita, I call your name

Oh, the snow will be a blinding
Sight to see as it lies on yonder hillside
The lock upon my garden gate's
A snail, that's what it is
The lock upon my garden gate's
A snail, that's what it is
Caterpillar sheds his skin
To find a butterfly within
Caterpillar sheds his skin
To find a butterfly within

Everybody, everybody!
Ah, my, my

First there is a mountain
Then there is no mountain, then there is
First there is a mountain
Then there is no mountain, then there is
First there is a mountain

I could not imagine Alan running a season and not playing a song...so here we go pops. I took the one that Peewee and BEV were going on about and Cloverdaled it right up.
With the added bonus of me being hopped up on cold meds and bourbon...
and having Laryngitis.
This is probably dog excrement. Oh well. Had to play a song for ya.

The Don't Sit on My Jimmy Shands (a Beltona squeezebox, I gather) song is Richard Thompson's and quite a corker.

Yes, Richard Thompson. Sort of, on the squeezebox. Jimmy Shand was a Scottish accordion player, and the narrator of the song is saying, "don't sit on my Jimmy Shand records" ... which were 78's. He seems to be singing to a rather large woman who has been imbibing and is not particularly graceful in her body ... so he's worried she's going to break his 78's. And he seems prepared to do her some violence if she does. I know a collector of 78's ... and you would not want to sit on any of his either.

I sit corrected (but not on anyone's records). It seems that Beltona did make both Accordians and Records so, perhaps you can imagine my confusion as being somewhat justified.

Sorry to interrupt folks (Alan) but I've created a thread for seasonistas who transform songs from their original major key into a minor key.
IT'S HERE (http://forum.ukuleleunderground.com/showthread.php?100626-Seasonistas-transforming-Major-to-Minor)
I thought it would be nice to see them all in one thread. I know Pabrizzer and Krabbers have done a number of minor versions so hope they'd contribute.

Of course now, just to be contrary (and because it's me, happy song girl), I'm wanting to take a sad minor-key song and transform it to a happy major key. Open to suggestions. Have I started (or perpetuated) enough sidetracks on this thread yet, do you think? I've lost count ... at least three.

I was thinking to do this one before Rob mentioned Les Barker, but his post got me going on it. Our local friend Ken Galipeau has made an entire album, "Ken Sings Les" (https://play.spotify.com/album/2ysdXUILpzj8QxyewlV0Ti), of songs based on the charming poems of Les Barker. There are a few other pet-related ones there if you're looking for something cute and fun to do ... and Les has additional animal poems not yet set to music ... Rob posted links to two of them ... I mentioned at least one more.

Here's Ken's "Go Stay Fetch" (https://play.spotify.com/track/1Z1Dw4kzUWQmqHHoeCQJFg), based on Les's poem which I believe is called "Stay, Go and Fetch" (http://youtu.be/kDTbGSarQpk). A little warning on the importance of carefully naming your pets.

In college, my house adopted a local stray cat and named her Scumbags. Scummy for short. She was a pretty happy, friendly cat in spite of that. And in spite of living with 30-odd college students.

My uke is back! With a brand new fretboard. I am loving the new Fremont black fluorocarbon strings Magic Fluke (http://www.MagicFluke.com) returned her to me with. (Excellent company ... I only had to pay shipping - fretboard transplant and my choice of new strings were free of charge. For a uke I bought third-hand.)

First time I've ever made a video without either reining in my playing or overpowering my singing and mic. These are going to be great strings for videos, methinks. Now I just need a banjo uke to hammer on in our loud guitar jams. :)

I may have missed something in the discussion about this Season's rubric, but I'm sticking to pets; otherwise, I'd have probably done "I'm a g-nu".

Anyway, so there's this. Not only is it about a pet, it also name-checks Georgia. So win-win for me!

The original is in the key of F# (really!!). Which means of course that the VII note is E# :)

So on the basis that you don't often get to sing a song containing an E# (not claiming that I ever hit that note btw), this is in F# too. Strictly one-take, fluffs and all.

I know this song well. But neither this or "Pearly Jim" are among my 100 favorite Richard Thompson songs. I still have a program from the Rumor and Sigh tour where RT discusses every song on the album. He says "The song is about a nerd at a party who wants to play Jimmy Shand records all night. I was probably reminded of a story about Bob Dylan at a party with a Robert Johnson LP. It was a throw away story, but I had this vision of Dylan jealously guarding the record player to get every ounce out of the record."

Here is a traditional song covered by the Beach Boys to which I wrote new lyrics about my old dog Skipper this week.

We used to live in Lagos, Nigeria and poor old Skipper was a sheepdog cross, so it was nearly always too hot for him, my strongest memories are of him panting away in the shade. I wanted to show you some photos of him in colour, but I can't find the album of our days in Lagos. Luckily, I inherited some other B&W photos this summer and they included a couple of photos with Skipper in them, but not with a young Berni - the guy on the left in the preview is my kid brother Rob. I had an incredible moment today - I've been looking at various recording studios around LA for a film project because I'm a location scout. Each one seems to have a brag-line about what artist recorded what record in what room. Pretty interesting, but today, I was blindsided after walking into a tiny studio at Eastwest (formerly Western): "this is the room where the Beach Boys recorded much of Pet Sounds" I was overwhelmed by the simple fact and the tiny room. Wow! http://www.eastweststudios.com/studio3/
so I have to do a third song in honor of that glorious coincidence.

Here's "Hang on to Your Ego", the original lyrics to "I know there's an answer" before Mike Love talked Brian out of using such druggy weird lyrics.
from wiki: "During vocal overdub sessions in March 1966, Mike Love objected to the possible drug connotations of the title and certain lyrics. "I was aware that Brian was beginning to experiment with LSD and other psychedelics ... The prevailing drug jargon at the time had it that doses of LSD would shatter your ego, as if that were a positive thing ... I wasn't interested in taking acid or getting rid of my ego."[1] As Love later admitted that he would actively refuse to sing some lyrics of Pet Sounds,[11] he reasoned: "[It] was too much of a doper song for me. So I came up with the alternative lyric, which reflected finding yourself. "

The Beach Boys always had a square side,

Oh, so many memories. This brings back the time when my Mum and Dad bought their first "radiogram". It had a tilt out record player. One of the first records they bought me was a Petula Clark double record. It was actually a 78rpm size i.e.10 inch, but it played at 33 rpm. Although most 33rpm records those days were 10 inch, but were normally "long players". It was 2 records, one track per side, and featured Singing on a Star, Christopher Robin at Buckingham Palace, Where Did My Snowman Go, and Never Smile at a Crocodile. I guess they might all be relevant for Season 136 just announced.

Harry did "The Cat Came Back" which reminded me of another cat came back song (early progenitor perhaps?) and the style fit with my new toy so...

Now all of my SEUKER pals from today's jam are Seasonistas, too!
Sorry for the sideways camera. Southside Mike said to me, "They could be in your Season with this song!" and I was off to make a goofy turn around the clubhouse.

Be sure to check with us if you're going to be visiting ATL on the the 1st or 3rd Sunday of any month or the 1st Thursday so you can join in, mmkay?

Had to add this photo to show you how many Seasonistas it take to recreate some of those fine, fine Dougf chords. I call this group the Frinkophiles and Ginny was there, too, in her office capturing the moment when she realized how rare it was to recreate the Frink power chord:

Alan - I am so touched that you liked my old video. It means a lot to me. I will always miss my sweet Gypsy.

I'm just sitting down to record my actual entry for this week. It's only 5:30PM here on Sunday night so the Season isn't over is it? I've had such a long week that I'm only now finding time to record. Here comes entry 85!! (soon as I can record it).

I was surprised too! I often record late Sunday night. I actually went back to see if the end time was changed just for this Season in case I missed it.
I also went back and watched the video you did with pabrizzer- Do You Want to Dance. That is such a great version. I'm learning it now for this Season and remembered your collab - I wanted to watch it again for some inspiration. :)

That's right.
Maybe folks will forgive me. Hard to unring that bell.
I just hope I don't get fired.

Plus, 50's!

I'm sorry to be such a dunce.
LOTS going on here as I'm sure there is with you. In trying to get things finished up I just jumped the gun.
Since I already posted the summation I can't see pulling it back, though.

Feel free to have a laugh at my expanse, er.. expense and please accept my apologies.

I understand you were excited to share all the cool Seasonista / CD matchups. Who wouldn't be? Of course it's your season and you can make the rules. You could always award more if some late entry struck your fancy.... just sayin...

Yes, that was a great wrapup vid Alan and congrats to the winners. Now my winner for the "pet guess" is Larry D! I only had 3 people guess, Larry guessed 27, ukecan1 guessed 19 and Bev guessed 7. We actually have, hold on to your hats now,............2 dogs, 3 cats, 2 turtles, 4 rats, 4 bunnies, 2 parakeets, 2 hamsters, 1 gecko, 1 toad, 1 chinchilla, a group of hermit crabs (about 8) and a plethora of fish in 3 tanks. That makes 24 (: Larry, send me your address you've won a Ukulele wood puzzle.

Took me ages to find it. I felt like you did, Tina. Either that or I thought my iPad was playing silly buggers so I tried my PC. Still not there. In the end I found it by accident when I was following up a different link so you were definitely not being stupid.

Oh, lordy. I'm sorry. I DID miss putting you on the playlist Tinafishlette!
I will attempt to make amends here by bouncing your entry up to the top of the heap for what may be my last official act of this season.
Thanks SO much for this beautiful tune. I don't believe I've heard you sing a blues before and I am astounded with the level of bluesiness you have found in Mongolia!

Stay safe and warm and watch out for dogs of the nonpet variety.

Let's try some Norah Jones! Whooo, first Seasons video on the new uke and from Mongolia!

As a random sidenote, the dogs in this country are mean bastards. When you see a dog, you have to pick up rocks, because when that thing comes after you, you're going to want something to throw at it.

Hi Alan, thanks for a great theme and being an attentive and cheerful host!
Congrats to the winners of course, and good for you for restoring the meritocracy. I know how hard it is.
I loved learning some BB songs, I consider them to be completely unmatched in terms of combining amazing pop hooks with weird melodies, few other artists come close (XTC maybe?).
Also I wanted to share a photo I came across in the archives from a non-descript neighborhood in Hawthorne CA..
