View Full Version : Worth 99p?

I bought a small piece of Walnut off Ebay for 99p (no other bidder): it was described as odd shaped but interesting and maybe suitable as a teapot stand etc. I thought it was almost big enough for a tenor uke back. I got 3 slices out of it-not quite wide enough for 3 backs.

So here is tenor uke no 7, my first in walnut with an Ebay back, my first with a western red cedar top, my first with a non-homemade rosette, and the first where I have used nitro cellulose lacquer to protect the top (the rest of the instrument in Tru oil). The soundboard is about 2 mm thick feathered at the edges with 5 low fan struts, no bridge patch, 10 mm string spacing at nut. It has a cherry neck and top binding: the back binding/backstrip/endgraft are all walnut.

All who have seen it think its my best looking/best sounding uke to date. It has lots of volume and has a mellow/warm tone which is closer to the tenor with a mahogany top (sapele box) than the one with a spruce top (sapele box).

I hope you will agree my 99p ($1.60) was well spent.

Sorry, but the attachments don't seem to work for me!

Very well done. That walnut is exceptional. Would have been a shame to make the wood into a teapot stand.

Gorgeous! I'd love to hear a sound sample.

Thanks for the kind words. Unfortunately I'm not musical and my recent attempts to learn the uke have been thrown off course by deciding to learn to make them!

I struggle with rhythm and can't sing. Playing an accompaniment on the top 5 frets is all I can manage on a good day, so I don't think my playing/singing does any uke justice. I need a competent player for a demo of my instruments.

So for what its worth you may/may not get some idea of how the uke sounds from the attached tunes: 'Back Home Again ' (John Denver), 'Wise men say' strummed, and my attempt at Kathy's song. (Sorry about the recording quality-first time I've tried to record or use Soundcloud ).

It has Living Waters strings with Low G (which I like).

You have been warned: hearing damage may occur or you may be put off ukes for life!!!
