Season 139
Repeated Words

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JrYi4EBK-Ng

Do a song that repeats a word in the lyrics somewhere.
Not a phrase or a pair of words just the one word as in my season intro song.
Prizes (3) will be some cheap eBay ukulele capos.
I’ll just choose the video entries that I like.
Only post new videos done for this season please.
Starts 12:01am Sunday 12th Nov and ends 11.59pm Sunday 19th Nov Hawaii time.
Please have something (spoken or written) in the video that makes it clear that it is for Season of the Ukulele 139.

i was gonna ask if i could borrow the dancing girls, but i think they'd be wasted with the bird's eye view - we'd only see their feet - so i guess you and your awesome moves and your dancing girls better get your recording set up sorted!

Yes exactly what I'm after Mark and done so well (as usual). Sort of has a tango-ish feel in parts. Like the outro.
I do like what you bring to each season.

Although it is not 12:01 am in Hawaii yet it appears we are off. Don't forget Season 138 still has a day to go if you haven't joined in there yet.

Just to be clear the repeated words DO NOT have to be in the title - just somewhere in the lyrics.
Of course they can be in both as in Mark's terrific entry.

Very Rob! Very teched up! Very interesting! Very good!

I like to use sounds in a song... sounds that I have never heard before, or that anybody has ever heard.
Believe it or not that vibrating drone was a harmonica just playing one note and put through a filter can effect.
There were a couple of Uke tracks, one strumming and one picking, but altered with a phaser and chorus
so they don't sound like ukes, and all done before breakfast... I have to adopt and modify the Queen of Heart's
policy... instead of thinking 5 impossible thoughts before breakfast I have to invent 5 unheard of sounds.

The less said about this the better. By my reckoning it qualifies by virtue of the words dance, plans, brands, hands, move, crew, do and I.

Fluffed a couple lines in the second verse but they weren't particularly profound so I'm not bothered.

Just checked out the original as it was unfamiliar to me. You've done well to turn it into a uke song.

Some good uke strumming in this one. Both these songs fit the theme well.

it's not a thing mark! there's nothing wrong with being keen as mustard to get uke-ing!

the start stop and overlap times of the seasons is just one of their very many charms but it's also a pit of confused craziness that we all trip into one time or other!

You don't get off that easy: lip-sync it if you have to, but after that teaser, we have to see the girls.
I sent them back to Englebert, sorry....watch the video, hey that was pretty risque back then.

I remember with Jeannie on Leave it to Jeannie was not allowed to show her belly button on TV. She is still looking pretty good after all these years....maybe she had a couple of nips and tucks. Who know maybe a couple of more and that belly button will be on her chin for the whole world to see

Keep those videos coming....they are great so far. This is my Sunday entertainment and look forward to each of the contests since I joined.
There is a lot of talent on this site....maybe some will rub off on me. I tried a video shot with my laptop......it was scary...maybe I will do one for Halloween to keep the ghouls away....Booooooooo!

Hey that may be a good theme for the next competition????

lots of people start out by angling the camera or laptop screen down so you only see the uke - and some people never STOP doing that! :uhoh: the handy thing is with that, especially if you are starting out with uke vids, you only have to worry about the uke! no worries about is your rock face rock enough, if you're rocking, or have you combed your hair, or, if you're a laydeeeeeee, have you put your make-up on. it also gives the dancing girls a rest, so i think it's all good!

Hey that may be a good theme for the next competition????

Hi Larry. The first Halloween week of Seasons, Peewee hosted a theme on ghouls. Last year for Halloween, I hosted a theme on body parts in song titles. (In the sticky posts at the top of the Seasons sub-forum, you can find all the previous themes and hosts.)

It's amazing that we've had 139 consecutive Seasons with no repeat of theme. We are SO creative!

Thanks for the good advice....I sound so much better in my mind compared to the couple of videos I attempted.....and no I was not drinking during the attempt...lol

I will work at it for my big debut ....less the dancers...they would just distract from my ukulele skill and raw animistic talent!

Honestly....after attempting a video....my admiration for those of you who post soared.

Exommen, I would never attempt holding a baby, sing and play the ukulele in perfect timing and escaping a wet shirt too. Even the baby was checking to ensure the uke was in perfect tune with the snark. I just loved it!

I'm right with this thought not only do I look and sound better in my mind but man o man was my recording equipment better, my shop much quieter in my mind as well. As a popular tattoo artist in the past there were times when a 15 minute trip to a store to say pick up a video game would take me around two hours due to bumping into clients. Its a great feeling but very tiring at times talking to 6+ people because you have worked on them.

A little while later I went to a tattoo convention and asked to shake hands with an artist I respected he shook my hand and turned and wandered off as I was about to ask him something. My client with me wanted to go stomp him for the disrespect, I laughed and told him to calm his jets the guy doesn't know me just because I know who he is. I made a decision then to not push for fame and just be an old school artist.

I do not show my face online and doubt the one picture that was out there still exists. I did go buy a Tascam DP-008, a better mic and I do still expect to some day be good enough to join in. If nothing else I follow along and have become more exposed to different music styles. When I do eventually join in I will likely do a ukulele/hands view myself. Ive looked at masks already... ;) A little mystery is good for the world.

Exommen, I would never attempt holding a baby, sing and play the ukulele in perfect timing and escaping a wet shirt too. Even the baby was checking to ensure the uke was in perfect tune with the snark. I just loved it!

He was pretty quiet in that one Larry. He can get pretty raucous sometimes. I was afraid he was going to rip the head of the Snark tuner and send it flying. Have 4 kids at home with the two youngest loving to be held. If I want to play I have had to adapt to all sorts of environments...

Wish I could have entered many Buddy Holly songs during 50's week but ironically was thwarted by an infestation of crickets in my recording area. These Hot Shot products did the trick with killing them off even though they are designed for fruit flies and gnats. But either way throughout my lifetime this has probably been my favorite song. I revere his work. This was one of the first songs I learned on me uke and was an early introduction(with the Eb) to the E chord shape. Since I worked on it early on I feel I hit it more often than not nowadays and wonder why people deteste the E chord when the B chord is much more problematic for me. My next song or the one after will be working the E chord and the B chord pretty thoroughly.

Well done, ma'am!
Lynda, you did a super job on this, especially as it's a song you didn't know and a singing style you play less often. It's quite a charming performance.

Now...for misfits island, how about trying to mix and mash them, like dueling expectations of love. If you intercut the videos of the two songs, you'd have the sad song upside down and the happy song right side up. :D

Sorry about the lenght of this one Pa. I know you like them short. I just got carried away. Repeated words are all the chorus, course. They are dum, diddy, and dah.

There was a fair bit of repetition in the verses too Rusty.
The original goes for 6:39 so you've actually made it a bit briefer.
Getting carried away with a Van Morrison song is understandable Rusty.
Good one!

Here's a second from me. A little bit shorter than my first.

There was about a one second clip in the video Pa linked at the beginning of the thread. I wondered, can I get away with this song as Roy Orbison had quite a vocal range? The answer was yes, just about, if I sang it about a third lower than the Big O did.

What a coincidence that we have a video from Rusty about Crying in Venice and now the classic Crying form Tootler.
You had the strum going there a couple of times. Ambitious to have a go at an Orbison song and you gave it a good go Geoff.

Yes, I was aware that there were a couple of places where the rhythm faltered but I decided just to live with it rather than try for a second take.

Well, it doesn't get much more perfect for a Season than a song where the repeated word is my own name. (Plus one other near the end.)

There are not many songs with my name in them at all ("Born to Run" is one not many people realize) ... and I'm pretty sure this is the only one where it's the title.

I'm pretty sure I would never have thought of this song if I hadn't learned it for Beach Boys Season a few weeks back ... and then not had the chance to record it. Thanks to Alan (decaturcomp) for the inspiration back then ... and to Big Daddy Uker for pointing out it was the obvious choice for me for that week.

I love these little Seasonistical synergies! It's even more perfect for this week, and I can play it better now ... so it's perfect I had to wait just the right amount of time to do it.

Thanks, Brian! Fun Season, fun theme, fun seeing everybody else's stuff.

Here's one I thought about doing last week, but it fits this theme. I remember this song from watching Hans Christian Andersen when I was a kid. I was thinking of doing another Kinks tune (Polly). If I have the time I might throw that over on the Island. I still have a song or two in me for this week I think.

I was going to try really, really hard to just do only one song this week, but my SOTU addiction has apparently become too strong. Doing only one song was bringing me "down, down, down" so I said: "No, no, no, no, no, no, no - Ah-Whee-Hoo!"
Addiction - schmiction; sure is fun!

It has been another busy week at Casa del Tigres but we managed to record a song last night; I even tried to play some drums...
We recorded a song from 2006 by the Canadian band Islands. Their record Return to the Sea is full of fun songs but with some pretty weird lyrics here and there... Here's Don't Call Me Whiney, Bobby!

http://youtu.be/t8d2j_M50Zc

I'm sorry I haven't been able to find the time to comment enough on videos. Things are hectic with toddler twins and Seasons keep flying by. But it doesn't mean I don't love you guys!

edit: By the way: Check out the pendant on Saskia's necklace. It made from the same piece of curly koa as the binding on my ukulele! Beautiful little gesture from my friends Terry and Perry at Covered Bridge ukuleles. Love those fellas!

OK here's my entry. I didn't think I'd get this done this week due to hospital and work commitments.
It's a very dated song with what some may term as sleazy lyrics. Hopefully, I restore the gender balance towards the end. My excuse for using this is that it was number 3 in the charts in the year I was born AND it fits the theme. Sorry in advance girls. ;-)

There are a surprising number of tutorials on how to do this particular bass riff on YT. If I were to do this vid over i would play it in closed position up the neck (which is how it's tabbed for the electric bass).

Well I managed to get another in the can for ya Brian. Cheers!

"Baby Did a Bad Bad Thing" by Chris Isaak. This classic Isaak tune appeared in the 1999 erotic thriller "Eyes Wide Shut" Kubrick's last film but was released as the first track to the 1995 album Forever Blue.

Now the catch phrase is a real tongue twister and would have fit my Mondegreen season because I always though it was "THEY" did a bad bad thing until I saw the movie and heard the remixed version. DOH!

My Basset hound Marvin makes an appearance but he was apparently more interested in the scenery than my performance. Hopefully you don't feel the same ;)

Maybe the finger can 'break in' steadily under the plaster.
Each time I've played for any length of time I've developed a tiny blister quite deep under the skin. It doesn't bubble or pop but it's there.

Didn't think I'd have time for two songs, but I had a technical hitch which was preventing me working and so I managed to get this one in. Here's how it came about.

My wife, Carmen, periodically goes out with her mates for a night out. I am happy for her when she does this, but last night I had a couple of whiskeys and had the TV news on while strumming on my Uke. I started feeling a little maudlin and this song just sort of emerged.

http://youtu.be/j76xh8EW1qg

PS I didn't see the music stand in the viewfinder. But there it is on the end video. That'll teach me to rush the recording ;)

Alone, Alone

Dm C
Hope youre not thinking of me
Dm C
While youre out with your friends
Bb F
You deserve to let your hair down
C
At any event.
Dm C
Im lucky that you found me.
Dm C
Im not the kind to moan,
Bb F
But in a crowd is when I feel
C Bb
So very alone, alone.

Gm Dm
I stare at the pictures
Gm Dm
They chill me to the bone.
Gm Dm
My response, like the sound is muted.
C Bb
Leave me alone, alone!

Im a vat of deep frustration,
That there is no master plan.
I cant believe the folly
Of my fellow man.
Kill or die for a fable,
Nothing for which to atone.
But fighting poverty and cruelty,
You cant send in the drones, the drones.

CHORUS

To the whole world Im connected,
All I've got to do is click.
But I never felt so isolated,
It cuts to the quick.
Youre out at the disco
Im here all alone.
Outside they're playing versions
Of Game of Thrones throwing stones.

CHORUS

Really like this one Berni. Melody is great - middle verse sort of doesn't belong to the rest of the song but it's my favourite. It's another of your songs that struck a bit of a chord with me.

This is such a fun Season, I'm enjoying every entry! Just a quick aside, though - I find it ironic that the following song doesn't qualify for the theme!
Double Talk by the Canote Brothers

I play this one all the time for the kiddies.
Twinkle Twinkle and Ba Ba Black Sheep and the A B C song are the same melody.

Will someone do Ba Ba Black sheep?

#96 vids!

Almost to 100 vids for pabrizzer. That will be a record amount for him.

If everybody does one more we could easily tip the scale for him:)

Haha, if everyone does one more, I think he is in trouble! :)
That said, I am working on at least one more. :)

A terrific take on this little gem.
Oh. And out takes fun.

Glimmer, Glimmer.

OK. We'll call it seven and half because it's short and sweet.
Thanks Rex.
You know it's all about the fun here.

I think you may be underestimating this fab host:)

However with nearly 50 participants (excellent) this week, half that is doable don't you think?!

We now have Jazzbanjorex and Bigdaddyuker taking the lead with 8 vids each. Good job guys! Looks like a challenge is on to me:)

Thanks. Never realized it was the same tune. Those lyrics came from Caspar Baby Pants - he is a favorite of my chitlins!!

Linda told me you were looking for more songs from couples, Brian.
Craig thought of this sweet little tune.

The Playlists used to say how much play time the entire playlist was. I don't see that data anymore.

RAB invited me to collab on this song, transmission by joy division, but as you all know, big stuff is going on for him and we won't get a chance to do more work on it this week

he suggested i post this run through i did for him, of the u-bass line he wanted me to do for the song

rough and ready work in progress, but you can hopefully get a gist of what we were hoping to do!

he was gonna sing and do uke magic, i was gonna do u-bass and come in on the "dance dance dance" chorus

I think Linda needs to do this:

http://youtu.be/4eIDtwcFXcI

I thought the title word was repeated at the end of one line, beginning of the next. It is not. But "Juliet" is. So it still counts.

Just having a little fun with multiple tracks. Out of town all week so this is posted later than usual. In Pa's honor it's one take and out on each track. Didn't realize I didn't get much of the uke until long after I recorded it. Sorry about that......

Believe it or not I seriously considered this song today but I didn't think it worked and I didn't have the energy. Too bad its a fantastic song!

This song has been gnawing at me, it seems so un-ukulele friendly, that just made it gnaw harder. It needs some weird discordant soloing to reach the levels of cooler-than-thou droning weirdness of the 1967 original (http://youtu.be/4Bp-ihtgzdE) One chord throughout, except one measure in the chorus..
Run Run Run by the Velvet Underground - one take, on the Bari, a Pa approach, if not a Pa result.

Besides you've both already swam into the deep waters. Lets see if you sink or swim:)
