I'm not sure if I should have put this in general discussion... so if it goes there, go ahead and move it for me please!

I hurt my hand (poor me) and have spent my afternoon watching people on YouTube... and it it me... Ukulele players have the coolest hats. I think it's because so many of us are stuck in the nether regions between rock, blues, and jazz... speak up if you disagree...

I'm sure there are some sweet hats on UU... so post a picture of yourself in your favorite ukulele hat here. I'll start:

That seems to be one I see around often ... and I LOVE IT! What is that style called?

I've got a Panama that I should take a pic with and a straw/bamboo weavy cap.

Sorry about your finger, beejums. Hope it gets better soon!

It's hard for me to pick a favorite hat. I love hats. the two I really like I no longer have - one was a huge Mad Hatter hat, and the other was a velvet jester hat with points that were super long, like down to my waist.

But here are my current, more functional hats:

- Jayne hat (from Firefly)
- Black and pink cat-eared hat
- Crocheted pink beret that I made myself, and the pic after is a knitted cat scarf I made to wear with it
- The green beret is not mine - I made it for my niece for St. Patty's day

It's called a 'trilby,' but it's often misclassified as a fedora (fedoras have larger brims, and they aren't turned up in the back)

Thanks! I'll be fine, I just go "ouch" every time I have to barre (is it still barre when it's a verb?) something. Hemophilia sucks.

ej,
i actually stopped buying SF Giants caps in october and UH caps in december. I really only buy Fitted Hawai`i (Aloha Served Daily!) caps at this point, especially the Kamehameha hats, but i guess UAS may put a stop to that too! lol. here's a few more:

1. shave ice kamehameha fitteds 6-pack
2. makani fitted (like those hawaiian "warrior" helmets) and a cheapie `ukulele my wife bought me and i grinded my nails on.
3. grape UH fitted and a Superfishal fitted. Some brown houndstooth nike CB34s. and a yarn lei i made.

the first two in the other posts:
1. red smoke in4mation "hi" fitted
2. teal kala fitted.

i guess i'm a little OCD, but i've been collecting (hats and abu garcia reels) for years. i have a hat for every day for at least the next year. and i can fish with a new reel for the next month and a half haha.

but back on topic. i really love wearing my Kamehameha fitteds when I play.

Pretty sure it is a size. Fitted means it has a size. I wear a 7 1/4 fitted hat. So not adjustable or flexfit (one size fits all).

You all got some cool hats.

It's the circumference of the hatband in inches. You can find your size the same way you measure your chest/bust...just wrap a tape measure around your head where a hat would normally sit. (If you don't have a tape measure you can use anything that will wrap around and measure it with a ruler...for some reason this doesn't occur to people!)

It's the circumference of the hatband in inches...

Hat sizes always seemed mysterious to me because they seemingly had no correlation to the measurements of a head...

But in fact -- hat size is determined by a ratio of the circumference of the cabeza in question in inches divided by π (pi)(3.14)...

Ergo, the formulŠ are: hat size = head circumference in inches ¸ 3.14

and

hat size = head circumference in centimetres ¸ 7.98...

OMG, I just looked that up and it's true. You're basically figuring out the diameter of your head. Which is silly because why not just use the circumference measurement? I also read that women's hats are sized by circumference. So maybe it was just a way to differentiate men and women's hats. Don't want men walking around in girly hats, now. lol

I love this felt porkpie hat. (sorry the image of the hat isn't the best)

And this hat is just for fun. It's not the best pic of the hat since the image has been stylized but you get the idea. It's a felt bowler.

Those "fitteds" and others like them are caps, not hats. Nothing wrong with them, I've got some caps too, but they're not hats.

Here's several of my hats and one cap.

The first one is of me in my main fave, a summer straw fedora (a stingy brim, baby). Not terribly expensive, but not cheap.

The second one is of me in my most spendy hat, a nice Stetson fedora.

The third one is a real cheapie. It's a "straw" porkpie from China that's actually made of out paper. Braided paper, but paper. I'm standing with some uke player I met. I think with a little practice the kid'll be good.

The next one is shortly after I got the Glyph. It's a fedora I got from Target and it's now gracing the dome of the might Deach.

The last one is of me in a cap. This one was made by my Fallen Angel. I'm sitting next to my friend Hal. He saw my Glyph at a Petty Booka show about 2 or 3 days after I got it. The next morning he ordered one. Mine is serial #S003, his is #S013.

I'm digging all these straw fedoras! I didn't even know they existed before this site. lol I'm gonna have to get me one - I don't care if it's a man's hat. They look cool.

I forgot this sunhat - it's a cheapy from Walmart or Target, I don't remember. It turned out to be my most worn hat since it's sunny most of the time in CA. It has been to Kauai with me too. :D Hard to tell in the pic, but it has red and white stripes under the brim as well as on the piping around the hat. The style is versatile so I can wear it with sporty or dressy clothes.

depends on the cap really. like the one they released today. the other colorways before sold out QUICK when they were released. they only made 100 total of this one, so if you got a big big head like a 7/8 or a small one 7 it should be cool. but anything in between is hard. when i had hair (i donated about 16inches a year ago) i got any hat i wanted hahaha. i know one of the guys there, so he saves me ONE cap sometimes. if its a limited release (like only 30 made) i'm ass out. but he hooked me up today. if i wanted an extra one, i have to call in just like the rest. but for sure FITTED HAWAI`I folks are on point. I used to buy Kicks/hi too, but seriously i was getting multiple hats on the week (HUF, SF GIANTS CAPS, etc.). i'm seriously passing up tons of hats right now and i feel sick about it. but mortgage comes first haha.

but for real, like i said, those HWB fits are fire! i want a cane fire (i think thats what theyre called) hat! are they starters or new eras? i remember i used to hit up the starter outlet here in the bay and they had them HWB caps here too. i still have my maui stingrays snapback some where in the room.

Hats/caps. Tomatoes/tomatoes. Potatos/potatos.

Not a matter of spelling, they're two different items. It isn't a greater/lesser thing either, it's just proper nomenclature. I happen to live with a milliner and haberdashery is a passion with me. When I can afford it anyways.

Though I generally prefer hats to caps (except for the cabbie caps like in my last post with pics), I have been known to go out in a baseball style cap. I've attached an old pic. That's "Dog Mafia" at a Pike Market Busker Festival a few years back. L to R: Breeze on guitar, me on washboard, Filthy Phil Falcon (and his possum who's name I've forgotten) on guitar, Squeezebox Davy on accordian. I can't remember the cap either. I think the only one of that style I have left is an MGM (the movie studio, not the ukulele dealer).

HH--I'm loving the first straw fedora... You didn't happen to get it online so I can check the site out, did you?

No, sorry. I got it at Bernie Utz, an extremely old skool hat store here in Seattle. They've been in business (in the same location) for 70 years. You want to find the next hat store even similar, you got to drive down to San Francisco.

It's the same place my Stetson came from, though that one was a gift.

Here's a few pics (http://www.thefedoralounge.com/showthread.php?t=3818). Unfortunately, the inside pic doesn't do justice to the antique tiger maple cabinets.

The hat is right here and the tag says it's a "Fiesta" brand out of Phoenix, AZ. Maybe that'll help you track it down. I bought it a year and a half (or so) ago and it was $65.

Hobbit is absolutely correct. A cap is NOT a hat.......so since I posted a cap before, here's my favorite hat. It's a Tilley Hat. Tilley's are made in Canada and are very well made. The company that makes them insures them. If you loose or wear one out, they will replace it for free. My husband and I own three of them. This is my model number T3. Check out their website if you enjoy well made hats.

I hardly wear that one anymore. Shame really, since I also have a leopard skin print silk tie to go with it. I generally only wear it at solo gigs and my next one (on the 10th) is more Hawaiian-themed. I'll make a point of wearing it next time I get a gig with one of the burlesque troupes.

But this is the ultimate hat for cold temperatures.

A neighbor shot it for my dad, who then skinned and tanned the critter- (and before you go all PETA on me or something... well... okay, there really is no defense other than he made if for my brother, when we were kids- My brother was real big into thinking he was Davy Crockett.)

It really keeps the warmth in like no other hat I've ever warn.

Just checking out this thread for the first time. Lots of nice hats here. Here are some of my caps. I have a bunch of baseball caps too, but haven't been wearing them lately. From top left to bottom right there is Ben Sherman hat that I don't wear much, 2 Kangol Ventairs in navy blue and brown, another Kangol, Ben Sherman, another Ben Sherman, and finally my new Stefeno cap.

I finally got a fedora! It was a total impulse buy. I had jury duty last Tuesday and they let us out early so I hung out downtown the rest of the day. I found an awsome store with a huge selection of Panamas and other hats. (This one is not a Panama tho - those were too expensive. )

This one is made by Bailey. It really stuck out at me because of the colors. The store owner was telling me that the colored hats have been gaining popularity lately. It's actually a darker brown than in the pic - I think I was sitting too close to the lamp or something.

Put hats on and look in the mirror. That's pretty much what I do.

It also helps to:

Like hats.
Get beyond the "I don't look good in hats" thing.
Stop worrying about whether someone else thinks you look good in hats.

I'm afraid that's the sum of my "how to pick a hat" knowledge. I think the real hat expert is probably Craig Robertson.

Oh wait! You can also try the Fedora Lounge (http://www.thefedoralounge.com/forumdisplay.php?f=3).

Let me assure you, my talented pal, those are not "pricey" hats.

So far, I dig Hobbit's hats the most.... But I also use, "dig" as an adjective, so this shouldn't come as a surprise!...;)

first 2 definitions of "cap" via dictionary.com:

1. a close-fitting covering for the head, usually of soft supple material and having no visor or brim.
2. a brimless head covering with a visor, as a baseball cap.

sure sounds like a hat to me. yeeeeeeee! cleaning out the closet....

I can't wear a hat. It wears me. I always look less like I'm wearing a hat and more like it's just sitting on my head, tremendously out of place.

I wear baseball caps all summer because I go to baseball games all summer. Both of my boys play summer league ball and school ball. We also try to get to at least one or two St. Louis Cardinals games, and a few Southern Illinois Miners (Minor independent league baseball) games. My favorite is my Cardinals batting practice cap.

So I tend to play ukulele sans chapeau.

Well technically not solely uke playing hats, but primarily I wear the felt hat in fall and spring and the coconut straw hat in the summer. This picture was when I first got it. I generally wear it with the front brim turned down.

Oh and both of these hats came from www.millerhats.com. These guys have been great and they were the only place I could find that particular coconut straw hat in a fitted size.

Maybe I was inspired by Aldrine's hat, but I just bought this hat on eBay (http://cgi.ebay.com/Barmah-Stingy-Short-Brim-Fedora-Hat-Blk-Music-Band-M_W0QQitemZ330373844026QQcmdZViewItemQQptZLH_Defau ltDomain_0?hash=item4cebd0cc3a) and I'm waiting for it to get here.

I wish I could find a good Uke hat. I do wear flex fit baseball caps in the summer when camping, but any kind of hat, like RevWill said, just looks like it's sitting on my head, rather than being worn.

I can't remember if I replied in this thread but here is my hat. I want a new one but not sure what kind to get.

Yep Melissa82 you did already reply, check the page before! 3 fabulous hats there including this one (admittedly posted several months back).
Still, nice photos so no probs with posting twice!
I can't help with suggestions for a new hat, but I am sure you will look fab in whatever you choose!

As far as hats go, I'm really fond of this brand right now:
http://www.brixton.com/

Check them out. A bit pricey but they're well worth it.

Thanks for that link. I checked out the hats and liked the looks of the Hooligan. It just screams "Me". I ordered it and it just came in. I really love it and have been all over town with it today! I'm not much of a hat person but it is now my favorite all around/ukulele playing hat. I actually got appriciative nods from some old-timers at the bookstore today. Now I need a black one too.

I want a good uke hat but I don't care for ball caps... I have always wanted to wear a hat like Aldrine but I don't know if I could pull it off...

Thanks! I get the "jt" part (intials, yes?), and the "potd" (post of the day, right?). What's the extra letter for?
