View Full Version : Mint Condition '60s Cover Contest

Captain Google
02-26-2009, 11:16 AM
I'm on a rather limited budget, but I still wanted to hold a contest.

From the Beach Boys to Del Shannon, the Beatles to Herman's Hermits, the '60s were host to some of the most legendary musical acts of all time. The songs were simple, the sound clean, and people couldn't get enough.

Your mission, should you choose to accept it, is to interpret a song from this outstanding era.

Your prize: a box of your choice of twelve tins of any combination of the nine standard flavours of Oral Fixation (http://www.oralfix.com) mints.

The rules:
You may enter as many times as you would like.

You must play your ukulele.

If you have no camera, or are camera-shy, you may set your cover to animation or a slide show.

Videos must be uploaded to Youtube. (http://www.youtube.com) Link to your video in this thread.

At the beginning of your video, you must state, by either caption (NOT ANNOTATION) or spoken words, that it is an entry for my contest. The wording is up to you, as long as it includes the words "sixties" and "contest".

Any video that was uploaded before the date at which this contest started will be disqualified.

Your entries will be judged on how creative you were with your interpretation.

The deadline: Wednesday, April 15 (since 4×15=60), 2009 at 3:00 pm EST.
EDIT: The deadline is now Saturday, April 25, 2009 at 3:00 pm EST.

Good luck!

Youtube is still out to get me. My cover of Otis Redding's "I've been loving you too long" failed to upload 3 times, though at least now it gets a certain percentage of the way through before failing, rather than just sitting there for 12 hours! It will get there though, and I have a plan for another 6 or 7 songs....

As Tears Go By - The Rolling Stones (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8l0NNZmNzMQ)

I was 13 years old in 1964 when the Marianne Faithfull version came out. The most excellent Stones version was the "B" side of "19th Nervous Breakdown".

Wonderful entries, Sam.

You know, two things amuse me about this contest:

1) Here I am, just 19 years old, hosting a contest to honor an era that came 30 years too early for me.

2) The prize is just a box of mints.

Okay, the second thing doesn't so much amuse me as it makes me proud to be among a group of people willing to play a song for practically nothing.

Big mahaloz from the Cap'n! :shaka:

I thought I'd go a little off piste with this one. Having the sixties as a song pool is like shooting fish in a barrel as there are thousands of great songs to choose from. So I haven't gone for any of those!

Although it is a trippy video with as many psychedelukulelic effects as I could throw at it, apart from some background noises, there are no effects on the two ukes and one bass.

This'll teach me to think I know what I'm talking about... I just noticed the little note that said they only ship to the US.

Here's what I'll do about it: If the winner is not in the US, I will still go ahead and ask him/her what he/she wants. I'll order it, have it delivered to me, and then send it off to the correct address. I'll still take care of the shipping costs, of course.

If the winner is in the US, I'll have it shipped right off to his/her address, not crossing my doorstep. The mints will take about two weeks to arrive (or a little longer in the event of a non-US winner).

Three days left! Three days remain for any last-minute entries!

The folks at Oral Fixation aren't very quick to respond. If a winner outside of the US is chosen, I don't know quite how long it will be before things are ironed out.

I'm still amazed at the turnout for my contest. I expected a few, but wow!

Remember, I'll be holding another contest in either July or August.

The contest is now over! The winner will be announced on Thursday, April 30!

Also, I've assembled a playlist (http://www.youtube.com/view_play_list?p=B25EC11923272AAF) containing all of the entries I have received. Check it out if you have some free time.

JJ's an amazing player and performer. He was in the top tier of players in the Go '80's contest. None were better players.

Congrats JJ!

Wow.

Just... wow!

I am surprised and flattered to have had one of my vids picked out of all the other amazing entries. Thanks for all the kind comments, and molto mahalos to Cap'n Google for going through the trouble of organizing and judging the contest.

(And my girlfriend will greatly appreciate me getting the mints. :D)
