Hot Baritone Question

Hello!

Does your friend have a budget?
He didn't discuss that with me. I am assuming he is talking a beginners baritone,as he is a beginner. I guess I was asking what brands and models do folks own recommend these days.

Pono without a doubt for lesser priced

or

Kala

I would go for the Pono line.

Perhaps I was in a similar situation as your friend. Had never played a ukulele, but wanted to give it a try. Ended up buying a Lanikai Baritone on EBAY for the extravagant price of $30 (plus $14 shipping). These are new in box, but may have cosmetic blems. Mine was in great shape, and I have been happily playing it ever since.

Although my total sample size is only one, I think it sounds ok.

Hope your friend enjoys playing whatever he decides to buy.

Some beginners start with a $40 instrument, others want to start with a $600 instrument. As we all know, that makes a difference in playability, action etc. Just didn't want to recommend something unsuitable! But in terms of hot, based on this forum, Pono is on faaiiiiaaarrrr.

I'll second the Lanakai's on EBay. I had one and kept it for 2-3 months before I decided I liked baritones enough to get a used Kamaka.

I started with a Savannah and still have it! I got a deal as it was the "floor model" and had a few signs of wear- but was under $50 a few years ago. I always suggest starting with a less expensive instrument,in the event the person winds up finding it's not their cup of tea.

Check the Marketplace here, there have been a few baritones listed lately...without looking, I can recall a couple Ponos and an old Silvertone in the last week or so.
