Neither of them are as cool as they could be. A Spongebob uke should be rectangular, like a cigar-box uke.

Yeah... that ToysRUs one in a square would be awesome :)

This place will ship worldwide:

They also have a pineapple version (which I think looks cooler) and a flying-V version. Just search the store for "spongebob".

The pineapple would be cooler if the paint job was of his house.

Cheaper than a Mahalo - I wonder what the shipping is? I think playing ukulele is dangerous. All this time I've been happy with one bass, what has the ukulele done to me?!

They have the plain one at Toys R' Us. (http://www.toysrus.com/product/index.jsp?productId=3150739) You could see if they have it at your local branch, or if they don't, they might be able to order it for you so you'll just have to go to the store for it. I don't know if Toys R' Us does that, but a lot of big chains do, so there's a pretty good chance it does.

This is a wonderful thread

I was just thinking about buying one yesterday when i took my niece to toysRus! she always tries to play mine...and i can be obnoxiously over protective of it so maybe i'll get her one..and one for myself too x)

My daughter bought me a spongebob uke for Christmas. It is very cool but the action is a bit high and it goes out of tune easily. The tone is dull and it has little or no sustain. Also, it sounds horrible when played beyond fret 4. Having said that, it is a cheap MDF toy with a heavy paint job so what can you expect. New strings did little to improve matters. All that said, it's not too bad, really.

Hear what it sounds like (with a little electronic tweaking) here:

Then the uke would have too many holes.

Hi Claire

I love my Spongebob uke (mainly because it was a gift from my daughter) but it is no more than a toy, really - a lot less playable that a Maholo. Glad you liked the vid.

I have one. Its made by first act and well it is what it is. I had to do a bit of work before it twas ready. I think if your not familiar with ukulele you might get discouraged. Bottom line, its fun! Come on, its Bobe'sponge. Less than a tank of gas and last longer too.:p

I got one of the Toys R Us versions (the one that looks like Spongebob in the shape of the uke) It may that particular one I bought, but I'm pretty sure they are across the board unplayable.

The Spongebob Ukulele available in the U.S. is particle board, painted yellow, with a print of the character laminated to the soundboard. Most of the ones I saw in the store were chipped, or the picture was torn a bit, or the paint was very thin and the wood was bleeding through, giving them a greenish tint. They have friction tuners, say what you will about friction tuners, but on a cheap, toy uke they are generally a disaster. The fretboard is plastic. I have both a fluke and flea, I'm not biased against plastic fretboards, but in this case it's just cheap and ugly. The screws holding it to the neck are visible. There are 12 frets, of which 10 could be reached, if you were inclined to rock out some Jake shit.

I replaced the fishing line it came with with d'addario strings, just to see if that helped. I've got a decent sound out of some $20 Mahalos with a simple string replacement. No dice. The G-C-E strings almost sound recognizable, but the A string...

If you've ever watched Spongebob and heard the squeaky, high laugh he does that is intentionally super annoying, the A string sounds something like that, but not as cute. It's .41mm of instant migraine.

I could not get a recognizable chord or simple C-scale out of this ukulele. Sometimes I give cheap ukes to my friends' kids to get them into playing. This piece of shite would turn a child off of music for a lifetime. It will look cute on my wall but it is not playable even the slightest.

As a side note, it was not my intention, but this seems to be my first UU review of an instrument. How silly am I? Perhaps later I will describe—in detail—all the kazoos I've owned before :shaka:
