hi folks. A friend has just built me a cigar box uke ( a strumstick essentially).

Confused by the string set he purchased for it though. I had always thought Cigar box ukes (3 string instruments, like a dulcimer etc) were standard tuned D-A-D.

anyone shed any light please? Much appreciated. jon

The small ("Standard") Strumstick is tuned G-D-G, the larger ("Grand") one is D-A-D.

Perhaps he purchased the standard set.

I don't know if there is a "standard" for cigar box ukes - I've no experience with them.

G-D-G is another popular three string tuning. Here's a great reference; http://www.cigarboxguitar.com/knowledge-base-category/cigar-box-guitars/

It's my understanding that it's a popular "baritone" tuning that would require different strings the G and g. I have a Merlin and plan on using that tuning to set myself apart from the jangley sound of the smaller bodied Dads.
