A friend of mine moved to Maui and now wants to buy a uke. Can anyone tell me if there are any uke dealers or music shops there that aren't just selling wall hangers to the tourists?

There a few very good ones.
1. Mele Ukulele...2 locations, 1 at the Shops of Wailea and their main shop in Wailuku. They sell Mele Ukes and a few other top "K" brands ...especially at the Wailea outlet
2. A great place with much selection and competitive prices is Bounty Music in Kahalui ...near airport...they carry most brands..e.g., Kamaka, Kanilea, Koaloha, Kala, Pono, Maui Music, Kamoa
3. There is a small shop in Lahina
I have purchased Ukes from all three. Google them for directions
Aloha

What Terry said. I am on Maui now and have visited all three stores. Mele was a little hard sell as I was looking for a long neck concert and they kept pushing the 6 string Mele on me. I ended up picking up a wonderful Imua super concert at Bounty.

I've visited both Bounty Music (around Kahului) and Lahaina Music (right near Hilo Hattie in Lahaina). Both were pretty small but had pretty good collections if I recall.
