I can't pick! The soprano has just the right sound; the concert and tenor so much more easy to play, and play up the neck.

Baritone (DGBE) when I'm playing by myself, tenor (GCEA, low G) when I'm playing with others or practicing something I'll be playing with others.

Well, I think we did this before, but who cares?
I only play the concert, don't like sopranos.
Tenors are too hard for me, and baritones are ridiculous.

Today it's concert, tomorrow probably soprano. It depends on my mood, and whether I want to play low G.

Re-entrant baritone for me, unless I'm traveling. If I'm feeling really lazy, I'll just capo at the fifth for a more traditional uke tone.

Interesting.

I read somewhere that soprano's outsell everything by a very large margin. And yet they are least popular of the regular tuning as far as what people like to play.

I wonder if that's because people shop with their wallets first?

Also... I've never really understood why tenors cost so much more than soprano's. The material and labor costs aren't that much different.

02-24-2015, 04:42 AM
concert is my favorite because it's a little easier to play than soprano, but I don't like to get too large of a size, just because I think ukuleles are small, tenors with low G are actually just little guitars...;-D

It's interesting concert is leading the poll by a good margin, yet most discussions and marketplace listings seem to lean toward tenors...

Ukulele Eddie
02-24-2015, 05:34 AM
I think this is the first poll I've seen where Concert was more popular than tenor. I really expected tenor to represent the majority.

02-24-2015, 05:38 AM
Ya know, most times when this type of poll is done the concert is at least near if not greater that tenor in popularity but you see more tenors for sale.

What's up with that??????

I don't know! I can't decide between concert and tenor!
I own 2 Rubin ukus - a laminate mahogany concert and a spruce top tenor. I play the tenor most of the time because it sounds a lot better, but the concert is a little easier to play with high-stretch chords, and the cuteness factor is higher.
I'm planning to order a higher-end uke soon (there are stores in my area, it has to be ordered online), and I really can't decide whether to get a concert or a tenor :(
(and don't tell me to get both, although I have UAS, I can't afford 2 mid-high end ukes).

I voted concert.

I like all sizes. Slight preference for soprano size even though my favourite uke I own right now is a baritone, but sopranos aren't that great for hammer-ons, which are my favourite thing to do in the universe. So next best: concert. Still small, good playability.

Depends on my mood. I play the tenor the most, with the baritone a VERY close second. Concert 3rd, and the soprano, for some unknown reason hardly ever. Go figure!

The results, so far, really surprise me. I'm shocked tenor is not double the percentage it is.
In fact, watching what people are ordering on the custom market, it seems people are leaning toward baritones, these days.

02-25-2015, 03:37 PM
Something about the concert makes it difficult for me to hold- too ancient to stand with a strap! Soprano's great but harder for feeble fingers.

I like a tenor, with a low G so I can easily use guitar chords I don't bother to transpose, because I'm either alone or jamming to some track.

Still like the SOUND pretty much in order- Soprano, then Concert then high G tenor, etc.

still love the feel of playing baritone, but by then it's practically a different instrument!

This 'utter bosh' is MY OPINION which is what these threads
(which turn up every few weeks) are about! Because someone
disagrees with you, it does not automatically follow that THEY
are the one in the wrong.

Just say gentlemen and women also choose other sizes and we can go back to being civil.
Otherwise, you're implying the other 78% of us barbarians.

I started out on a soprano but went to a tenor and thought I'd never try anything else. Plus I knew concerts were popular and didn't want to be like everyone else. But I kept gravitating to concerts in the shops. Now that I have my pineapple concert I'm tempted to get rid of everything except the Fluke - which is concert-like in a way.

I started with a tenor, then found I preferred concert. Then found I preferred soprano. Now I seem to flip between soprano & concert when I play at home, while the tenor has been sold. When I go out to play anywhere, a soprano goes with me. But I have a nice (I hope) custom concert due this summer, so that could tip the balance back again.

So, in the poll, concerts have a slight lead over tenors, but looking at HMS' stock, they have many more tenors listed...maybe they just can't keep concerts in stock? Same with the marketplace listings, sometimes there's a run of concerts, but much of the time the listings seem to be mostly tenors.

what's up with that?

i loaned my lu21p to my sister in law and have been playing my concert fluke for a while. For some reason or another my 7yro daughter had her dolphin out. Other than the strings being too close together (a complaint i've always had about the dolphin) it felt like finding an old friend.

I voted concert, but that is what I have, and I don't think that I've played the others enough to have an opinion.

When these threads come out, some seem to feel an obligation to point out that it has been done before, and I always feel obligated to respond that almost everything has already been done before, and if we didn't keep going over and over it, there would be nothing to talk about.

At this writing, the tenor and the concert are six votes apart. Hardly a resounding gap. In a basketball game, that lead could vanish pretty fast.

Kind of depends on the song, really. My soprano is high G whereas my tenor is low G, and the baritone of course being a whole different tuning.

I go back and forth between the soprano and the tenor, but overall I prefer the former. The small size is why I opted for ukuleles instead of a guitar, after all. Portability was a main criterion at the time.

When I decided to play uke 2 months ago, the primary reason I chose the instrument is undoubtedly due its unique sound niche i.e. "old traditional plinky tone" associated with those old Hawaiian songs. I go between soprano and concert depending on the type of song I fancy.

concert, because my hands are small and tenor (at least now) is a bit of a stretch. i play mosly fingerpicking / soloing rather than strumming and would prefer long neck (hence maybe tenor) but not if it means wider fret spacing. ive always wondered whether a super concert had wider frets than a concert. anyone know?

Just curious, is there a way UU could do a survey monkey thing and and actually tabulate the results within the programming of this website? a lot of websites have that. id be curious to know the results. if there were enough surveys completed (with other questions asked to determine perferences and general uke player characteristics), UU could sell the info to luthiers. im sure they would be intetested to learn the results as well from a marketing perspective.

as it pertains to this uke size question, i think there should be a sub question - what type of playing is mostly done (eg strumming vs fingerpicking / soloing). i think the responses may differ.
