The Hawaii Music Supply website - the ukulele site - is the best (ukulele) porn site on the web. Almost every day there is something new and interesting posted on the front page.

It takes an incredible amount of work to keep a web site that current. Either Andrew has to spend the time himself or shell out the money for an employee. Whichever he does it is really quite an investment in our community and his market. Not only does he keep the content fresh, but he makes those fabulous videos with Corey or Aaron playing that are always fun to watch and listen to. The commitment and dedication that it takes to keep that going is considerable. Of course all those great pictures and videos keep the UAS fires stoked, but the site is very informative and entertaining. I know it is a lot of work and really appreciate it.

I like that they are now (perhaps they always did) collecting all their excellent tutorials on the site. A great resource that saves a lot of time searching YT for them.

Certainly the "Gold Standard" for classy uke seller's website.

I agree with the above. I consider their site a library of uke acoustics. It's really amazing how different wood combinations and sizes mix to produce different tones and acoustics. Since I would have to drive several hours to see any sort of halfway decent selection of ukes, I really appreciate their effort in producing their videos. I just wish that they had a common intro to their uke demos. Then it would be a bit easier comparing ukes.

I bought one uke from them and they will get my business in the future. Now if I could only figure out how to play half as well as Corey, I'd be thrilled! Time to go play...

Hear, hear! I love HMS's website. It's miles beyond the rest, and is something for other sellers to aspire to. If I built ukes, I would certainly want them sold there. (not that I don't love Mims and Uke Republic, I do)
I too enjoy the videos a lot, Mim has done some neat ones too. The guys that work at HMS are fantastic players! The photography is always 1st rate. Someday I hope I can visit the store, not just the website.

I consider their site a library of uke acoustics

To this end, maybe Andrew would like to keep a separate section of all the unique ukes sold through them. The production models are probably not needed, just the custom ones or the limited editions.

Just a thought :)

Curiosity got me again and I ventured over to their site to see what's new. I found they have a new demo video up of Corey just killing it on the new Rebel thin concert. He must have had an extra shot of caffene, cause he's playing it like his fingers are on fire! All I can say is WOW! I have no idea how he does it but I sure enjoy watching him play. What a treat.

The only way you can get speed and accuracy like that is if you build it from the ground up, and spend time in building it up.
If you look at one of the earlier vids where he attempts this, he tries going this fast but loses his place! Gotta love Corey.. one of the best and most humble 'uke players in the business

Not only is Andrew great through his website, from a personal perspective, I appreciate all that he does for me as a builder. And lets not forget his staff. Their ability to take an instrument, and not only record it, but have honest commentary from Aaron et al, surely helps the prospective buyer to assist in feeding their UAS. It looks like they have fun at what they do, which makes it even more genuine.

Side note: I don't take pics anymore - I just wait until Andrew posts it and steal it from him! He does it so much better than I do!

I look at the site from time to time and I'm impressed by their range and reputation but it's generally easier to buy from European suppliers and makers. Import duties and overseas shipping costs mean that costs end up about the same.

Folks, Andrew is even nicer in person!

at last year's Ukulele Festival, some of us UUers wanted to set up a kanikapila canopy near the HMS tent.

Andrew ordered a full-size vendor's tent and let us use it all day for our kanikapila! it was the place to be!
ukulele players from all over the world came by, along with premier ukulele luthiers (Chuck Moore being one!),
and Uncle Kimo Hussey hung around and jammed with any and all. Corey and his band gathered and did
an informal concert for us, as did the International performers who stopped by!

Lord willing, Andrew is planning on doing the same thing for this year's Ukulele Festival. If you are there, please
stop by to say Hi and to join in with the day's jam/kanikapila :)

some of us (STRUM - Seattle's Totally-Relaxed Ukulele Musicians) are planning on renting a house in Ewa Beach
and endeavoring to join in on the Strummers to perform at the Ukulele Festival. We'll be uke'in' around the Island
and if you're there and have the time, you're welcome to join us. One afternoon/evening we'll be able to enjoy
a group class/lesson with Uncle Kimo Hussey before a potluck and jam session!

Hope to see you there.

I'll endeavor to send out more info as the Summer approaches with our contact info :)

keep uke'in'... and Mahalos Andrew and HMS!

UU is how I found the two guys who built my custom ukuleles. Listened to what they had to say in the Luthiers Lounge and liked what I heard. Michael Zuch built an outstanding tenor for me, and Beau Hannam is almost finished with another tenor. Michael has vids on his site; in the latter case, when I went looking for a sound sample, I found it on the HMS site, Corey doing his version of a Chet Atkins song. That's what convinced me. It sounded great, despite Andrew talking about how he didn't get the levels right.

Then it turned out that Corey's version of that song has a TAB, so now I have something to try and learn, too ...

I hit Andrew's website every day ... a couple times a day.

I agree it is the best resource for ukuleles on the internet for pricing, videos, lessons ... I think very highly of Andrew. I have had several long chats with him and consider him a friend despite living half a world apart.

He had the kind of integrity, and concern for a vendor that I want to buy from ... and because I know he will make sure the purchase is as close to perfect as can be, I choose to support him.

I agree with Mr. Petergal. When one finds a retailer they trust, it's not necessary to look elsewhere. Other than customs, I buy ukuleles from HMS.

PS I hope Petey Houdini gets to HMS and does some video around the store as he is going to HI tomorow. Andrew, if he sneaks by, toss him a soprano and have him record Paris In The 20s in your studio...he wrote it, it's phenomenal. (If one searches the vids, they can see it...amazing). He's a pro so wouldn't be too chickensh%t like most of us...lol.

+1000000 to this thread. I will always show up to sing HMS's and Andrew's praises after he repaired my ukulele at no cost after it was smashed by my cats (you can find the thread in my post history if you're curious as to how much of a menace two cats can truly be).

Sometimes I go on the site and just click through the new ukuleles and listen to the sound samples. The HMS staff plays beautifully!

I couldn't agree more, HMS's website is one of the daily sites I always checkout everyday. From the indepth articles about tonewoods, what makes a ukulele good, and ukulele lessons; it is one of the greatest resources out there for the ukulele.

I have ordered quite a few ukes already and most from HMS, as they are the best website, in terms of letting you hear the uke, set up, great support throughout the purchase and after, and online instructional videos and tabs. No problems whatsoever to ask, @turtledrum. Clara remains one of my all-time favorites and I will definitely get another in due time. I'm limited in how many I can have and continue to explore many different types of ukes. I think it's one of the best ukes you can get for under $1,500 and look forward to getting another some day when my limit is increased and/or my desire to explore has subsided.

Andrew after sales service is unparalleled in this world. He truly care for his customer regardless of the price of the instruments.

He probably did not know the first stop I made after a 10 hour flight from Canada was HMS store. My only regret is that he was on vacation , I never got to meet this great man but I have had many telephone calls and email exchanges with him ever since my first purchase and many more after that.

+1 from me as well. I've purchased many a uke from Andrew and the crew at HMS and it's always been a fantastic experience. Only place online that I would feel comfortable purchasing an expensive item sight unseen. I trust those guys and they've always delivered with their online storefront being an excellent front end to the fantastic overall experience that they create.

+1 from me too! Andrew and his crew promptly answered all my questions and this puts me at ease when making purchases...mind you, we have an 18 hr time difference and he still manages to respond quickly to emails. When doing these long distance online purchases, trust is all important and I do trust these guys!

Always a pleasure dealing with Andrew and his team.

When I buy an expensive Uke site unseen, I have full confidence in them to deliver a great Uke every time.

I have had a great experience with the following purchases and love them all.

* Koaloha Opio concert
* Pono ET-PC (tenor with cedar and macassar ebony)
* Kamaka 100th anniversary baritone
* Pono UL4-20 tenor guitar
* I'iwi tenor.

As Simon said above because these were all sight unseen, unplayed and unheard I am glad there is a place like HMS and Andrew that I can trust completely.

Andrew, Corey , Joel and Zach are my most trusted team plus Len ( Hawaii 50)

Andrew recommend the instrument
Corey gives his blessing
Joel does the set up
Zach takes picture of maste Joel working on my uke then ship to me in a timely manner
To top the cake:
Len writes hidden message on the box that I did not discover till three months later

This is truly a dream team!
Thank you guys! I have saved enough, it's time to shop soon!

Can I throw in my praise for the awesome folks at The Ukulele Site too?!

I've been fortunate to visit the boys at The Ukulele Site and HMS a few times and I can tell you they are the best from top to bottom. Everyone behind the scenes are just as amazing as Andrew and have made me feel welcomed every visit.

I always make time to hit up Wahiawa and Haleiwa when I'm on Oahu. One of the highlights of each trip.

(visiting Len too :) )

drop them off at Turtle Bay for a day of snorkeling if your kids are young. Three tables is cool if they're older.

As a builder, I feel compelled to chime in on this HMS love fest as they are most excellent folks. Every day (or at least every week;)) they raise the bar of what constitutes a great ukulele with exceptional attention to detail and knowledge sharing in a space that still has information blackholes—though less so now because of places like U.U. and HMS. They've moved us forward championing critical parts like Gotoh UPT tuners, electronic pickups, proper set-ups, strings. I am personally grateful for the support and advice they have offered over the years as well as the high expectations they have set for the building community. Thank you HMS for continuing to push forward the golden-age of ukuleles!

I also have to give a big thumbs up and thanks to HMS as well. The best site out there and they understand how to create a community around the ukulele and serve their customers and create interest for new customers.

From giving tutorial videos, to tabs for songs, to letting you hear each instrument, to giving a lot of photos of the ukes from different angles, so you at least have a good feel for how it sounds and looks, since most of us cant drop by the shop to actually hold it and play it. This builds interest in the ukulele and gets people visiting their site often. Even when some of their employees tour and perform, this also generates more interest in the ukulele around the world and creates new customers. They create a community around the ukulele. And also giving good customer service keeps people coming back as well.

I have bought close to 10 ukes from HMS, so it does fuel my UAS, but because of all this and the service, I will keep coming back. Great job Andrew and the HMS crew. And thanks!
