It's amazing what a couple years sitting with one end of a round of California Bay Laurel (myrtle) can do. The first picture is on the same tree at the same area of the trunk that I cut when I first got the wood. The other two pics are of the same wood after the round had been sitting with one end on the dirt for two years. When I first cut this wood I found it so boring that I just left the other round sitting on the dirt. Nature took over and produced this wonderful spalted patterns. I had a few termites near the bottom that were easy to cut off.

The best accidental discovery since penicillin... or maybe stainless steel... or maybe post-it notes. Darned fine effort anyway. Well done

Very interesting indeed. How was the integrity of the wood in the spalted areas? Punky? Structurally sound?

This wood is pretty common around where I live. Now I'm going to be looking for old discarded rounds. Thanks for the tip.
